Novo Nordisk Braces for November Update as Margin Doubts and Pipeline Bets Collide

Novo Nordisk has spent much of 2026 on the back foot, and the Danish drugmaker's next scheduled disclosure now carries outsized weight. Shares closed Friday at EUR 34.40, leaving the stock down 22 percent since the start of the year and trading 13 percent below its 200-day moving average — a gap that underscores how far sentiment has drifted from the highs once attached to the GLP-1 franchise.
Management has set the release of third-quarter 2026 results for November 4 at 07:30 CET. That interim report will be scrutinized for evidence of how the core business is holding up against the margin pressure that has dominated analyst commentary in recent weeks.
Citi and Deutsche Bank Trim Their Targets
The most recent wave of caution came from Citi, which on October 9 cut its price target to DKK 296 from DKK 310 while keeping a Neutral rating. The revision rested on expectations that operating margins will remain broadly flat through 2030 — a view management itself has signaled. Citi's analysts also recalibrated their medium-term earnings outlook, lowering projected annual earnings-per-share growth for 2027 to 2030 to 9 percent from 12 percent.
Deutsche Bank followed a similar path two days earlier, reducing its target to DKK 225 from DKK 245 and reaffirming a Sell recommendation.
The subdued reception to September's capital markets day has lingered. Concerns over the longer-term revenue trajectory, pricing flexibility and the company's future acquisition strategy have weighed on investor mood, according to media reports.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
Pipeline: One Setback, One Expansion
Against that backdrop, Novo Nordisk is working to broaden its portfolio beyond established GLP-1 treatments, leaning heavily on external partnerships. On September 25, the company signed a worldwide license and collaboration agreement with Sweden's Nanexa AB covering the use of its PharmaShell technology across as many as five development programs in obesity, type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic conditions. The deal carries potential payments of up to EUR 1.165 billion, including EUR 615 million in upfront, development and regulatory milestones, plus low single-digit percentage royalties.
Roughly two weeks ago, Novo Nordisk also secured exclusive worldwide rights outside mainland China to the oral candidate HRS-1596 through a licensing deal with Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals. That transaction could be worth up to USD 2.6 billion, and the shares have gained 2.6 percent since it was announced.
Not everything has moved smoothly. The FDA has extended its review of the hemophilia A candidate Denecimig after remediation work at a manufacturing site. The agency found no deficiencies in the clinical efficacy or safety data. Novo Nordisk said the delay will not affect its 2026 financial guidance and is targeting a US launch in the first half of 2027.
Buybacks and Data Offer Some Support
While the regulatory calendar has produced mixed signals, the company's capital return program has provided a steadier counterweight. Under a buyback plan worth up to DKK 15 billion, Novo Nordisk had repurchased more than DKK 10.2 billion of its own shares by early October, according to a company statement.
Fresh study data on obesity, released just over a week ago, further highlighted the potential of the product lineup — the stock has risen 3.2 percent since those results emerged. Together with the buyback activity, the moves illustrate management's effort to defend its market position even as the growth outlook cools.
Whether that combination is enough to shift the narrative may depend on what the November 4 report reveals about margins, volumes and the durability of the core franchise.
