Novavax has raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance while simultaneously delaying its profitability goal by a year — a trade-off that investors greeted with a sharp sell-off, sending the stock down 8.1% in the latest session.

The company now expects adjusted total revenue of $385–415 million for 2026, up from a prior range of $235–275 million. That $145 million increase at the midpoint of the guidance reflects the growing contribution of licensing and partnership payments rather than broad-based growth across all revenue streams. The distinction matters: product sales and milestone payments tied to development achievements flow through to the bottom line in fundamentally different ways, and future milestones remain contingent on specific conditions being met.

A Mixed Quarterly Picture

The third-quarter 2026 results illustrate that divergence. Revenue came in at $68 million, a decline of 3% year over year, as higher product sales failed to fully offset lower licensing, royalty and other revenue. Product revenue itself jumped 91%. Lower research and administrative expenses provided additional relief.

The net loss narrowed to $31 million from $202 million in the prior-year quarter — a substantial improvement achieved despite the revenue decline, underscoring the role of cost savings in the result. Still, the company remains in the red, and the opposing trajectories of its revenue sources limit how much the strong product growth can be extrapolated to the full year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novavax?

Sanofi Partnership Takes Center Stage

The Sanofi licensing agreement, valued at a minimum of $1.2 billion according to Reuters, has become the linchpin of Novavax's outlook. CEO John Jacobs is actively pursuing further partnerships, the report said.

Concrete progress is already visible. Sanofi's launch of a European Phase 3 trial for a combined influenza-COVID vaccine triggered a $125 million milestone payment in October. A corresponding U.S. late-stage study is planned for 2027, and a U.S. market launch could unlock a further $225 million — provided clinical and FDA requirements are satisfied. A technology transfer expected by mid-2027 is slated to bring in another $75 million.

Those payments, however, are tied to event-driven triggers rather than a steady revenue stream. The European trial launch confirms neither a successful completion of development nor a subsequent market launch, and the next potential inflows remain exposed to development and regulatory risk. Sanofi's timeline thus becomes a critical variable for Novavax's financial trajectory.

Cost Discipline Is the Second Test

Management has committed to cutting combined non-GAAP research and development plus selling, general and administrative costs by more than 50% by 2028 compared with 2025 levels. On a GAAP basis, the company projects combined R&D and SG&A expenses of $375–395 million. Cash, securities and restricted cash stood at $627 million as of September 30, with management expecting liquidity to extend into 2029.

Novavax at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The delayed non-GAAP profitability target — pushed from 2028 to 2029 — now coincides with the planned U.S. product launch, concentrating much of the company's economic outlook around a single execution point. Whether the cost base can be aligned to support that longer runway is the second decisive test alongside Sanofi's progress.

For investors, the higher revenue forecast and the extended wait for profits sit in tension. The contractual opportunities are valuable, but their economic impact must be proven over a longer horizon. The thesis gains conviction only if Sanofi reaches its next milestones on schedule and Novavax delivers on its cost plans in parallel. Until then, execution carries more weight than the upgraded revenue guidance.
