Novartis Balances a Completed FDA Approval Against Data Still on the Horizon

Novartis won FDA approval for Rhapsido in dermographism, but MS data and most Abogen deal value remain pending; Morgan Stanley cut its ADR target.

Novartis has handed investors a mixed bag of news in recent weeks, and the pieces carry very different weight. A regulatory green light that is already in the books sits alongside study readouts that have only been announced, plus a licensing deal whose headline value is mostly contingent. Sorting confirmed progress from future possibility is the real task here.

Rhapsido clears the FDA, but the label is narrow

The FDA approval secured last week for Rhapsido, whose active ingredient is remibrutinib, is a finished regulatory step. According to Novartis, the drug is cleared for adults with symptomatic dermographism who do not respond adequately to H1 antihistamines, making it the first approved therapy for this patient group.

The supporting data come from the Phase III RemIND trial. By week 12, 29.3% of treated patients achieved complete resolution of their wheals, compared with 14.0% on placebo. That gives the dermographism indication both a clinical result and an official clearance — a combination that is not transferable to other uses of the same molecule.

Multiple sclerosis data remain an open question

Remibrutinib is also under investigation in relapsing multiple sclerosis, and the dermographism approval says nothing about how that program will read out. Novartis has flagged presentations of the Phase III REMODEL-1/-2 studies at MSToronto2026, with a virtual investor event to follow. The congress lineup also includes results from the Phase III NEOS trial with Kesimpta. What matters for shareholders is the scheduled disclosure of those results, not the mere fact of a conference appearance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novartis?

Abogen deal: upfront cash versus conditional milestones

The licensing and option agreement struck with Abogen Biosciences roughly a week ago demands the same kind of separation. Abogen receives an upfront payment of USD 575 million, with up to USD 7.2 billion in milestone payments and revenue participation on top. That potential total should not be read as an immediate outlay.

Novartis picks up worldwide rights to ABO2203 along with options on further programs from Abogen's RNA platform. Those options are distinct from the already-agreed rights to ABO2203 itself.

Morgan Stanley trims its target, keeps its rating

Weighing on the valuation side, Morgan Stanley lowered its price target for the Novartis US ADR on Tuesday while leaving its positive recommendation intact. Analyst Thibault Boutherin made the cut, according to media reports, citing a review of the risk-reward balance.

The distinction matters. A lower target caps the level the bank is willing to pencil in; it is not a downgrade. The move therefore carries a more cautious valuation signal and a still-constructive rating at the same time, and should not be read as a wholesale change of view. Note also that the target refers specifically to the US ADR, so it is not directly comparable to a euro-quoted share price.

Novartis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

October's calendar provides the next tests

Novartis will publish third-quarter and nine-month 2026 results on October 27, adding a business-performance dimension to the product news. The MS data presentation is set for October 23.

For investors, the question is not whether Novartis has announced several advances — it clearly has. It is the uneven maturity of those advances that counts. The FDA decision is complete, the MS data presentation is pending, and a substantial share of the possible Abogen payments is tied to milestones. Keeping those categories apart prevents confirmed progress and future potential from being assigned the same value.
