Nokia Sheds 2.8% as Telecom Weakness Overshadows a Busy Stretch of Dealmaking

Nokia shares ended Monday's session at EUR 9.20, down 2.8%, as a broad pullback across the telecommunications sector weighed on Helsinki's benchmark index. No company-specific news drove the decline; instead, the stock found itself caught in a sector-wide downdraft that left it among the weakest performers on the OMX Helsinki 25, according to media reports. Nokia's US-listed shares also slipped, with market watchers pointing to profit-taking ahead of the upcoming quarterly report and to the company's recent portfolio restructuring.
The retreat does little to dent a standout year for the Finnish network equipment maker. Since January, the stock has climbed 64%, a gain that reflects investor approval of management's push into defense, software, and satellite technology. Even after Monday's slide, Nokia carries a market capitalization of EUR 52.67 billion. The company rejoined the Euro STOXX 50 roughly two weeks ago, though it has given up 3.8% since that return.
A Portfolio Being Reshaped
Behind the daily price swings, Nokia is in the middle of a deliberate overhaul that trims peripheral businesses while betting on higher-margin niches. Last Thursday brought confirmation of the sale of its Fixed Wireless Access unit to Inseego. As part of the transaction, Nokia received about 1.9 million Inseego shares — roughly an 11% stake — along with warrants for up to approximately 0.8 million additional shares at an exercise price of USD 4.26 each. Nokia also agreed to pay Inseego USD 10 million by October 15, 2026, tied to continued investment in technical development. The arrangement illustrates a broader strategic logic: not every end-customer segment needs to be run in-house when partnerships can share the cost of development.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?
That same day, Nokia announced a partnership with ICEYE aimed at building secure, sovereign satellite communications for government and defense customers. The project targets broadband systems in low Earth orbit, with the first satellite launches slated for 2028 — a long-horizon effort meant to secure Nokia a foothold in security-critical infrastructure.
Software Gains in Saudi Arabia
Progress in Nokia's traditional networking business has continued as well. On September 29, the company reported that Saudi operator Zain KSA has deployed the Nokia Deepfield Cloud Intelligence platform across a network spanning more than 100 cities. The system is designed to give the operator greater visibility into traffic and to route data more intelligently while guarding against threats, improving both network transparency and operational efficiency.
The October 22 Reckoning
Investors will get a clearer picture of how these moves are translating into financial results in a matter of weeks. Nokia plans to publish its figures for the third quarter and the first nine months of fiscal 2026 on October 22, 2026. Until then, the broader sector environment is likely to set the tone for the share price. The key question facing shareholders is whether Monday's weakness was merely a sector snapshot or a sign of deeper doubts about the company's repositioning — an answer that will only arrive with the numbers.
