Nokia's Portfolio Overhaul Gains Traction as October Earnings Loom

Nokia shares rose 2.2% to EUR 9.47 as Inseego completed its buy of Nokia's FWA unit; Q3 and nine-month results are due October 22, 2026.

Nokia shares finished Friday's session 2.2 percent higher at EUR 9.47, extending their year-to-date advance to 69 percent. No company-specific catalyst was identified in media coverage of the move, leaving investors to focus on a pair of strategic developments that have reshaped the Finnish equipment maker's portfolio in recent weeks.

The most concrete of those came Thursday, when Inseego completed its acquisition of Nokia's Fixed Wireless Access business. Nokia received roughly 1.9 million Inseego shares in return — a stake of about 11 percent — and has been promised an additional cash payment of USD 10 million by October 15, 2026. The structure turns a former operating division into a strategic minority holding, allowing Nokia to keep a foot in the segment's future upside without carrying its ongoing development costs alone.

That logic fits a broader effort to hive off peripheral activities and concentrate resources behind more profitable segments, while also tidying up the balance sheet ahead of future investments.

Software Deployments and Satellite Ambitions

Alongside the divestment, Nokia has been logging progress on the software side. Zain KSA went live on September 29 with Nokia's Deepfield Cloud Intelligence platform, deploying it across more than 100 Saudi cities. The system gives the operator real-time visibility into network traffic, speeding fault resolution and helping safeguard service quality.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

A second Deepfield win had already been secured on September 14, when Spanish internet exchange ESpanix selected Deepfield Defender to shield its node and connected networks from DDoS attacks.

Further afield, Nokia and ICEYE unveiled a partnership on Thursday covering secure broadband satellite communications in low Earth orbit. Aimed at government customers in defense, border security, emergency services and disaster response, the system is slated to see its first satellites launch in 2028. Together with the software rollouts, the project underscores a push to grow beyond conventional mobile networks and stake out a position as a supplier of critical infrastructure and highly protected communications for state agencies and large enterprise clients.

AI Partnerships and Defense Work

Nokia is simultaneously deepening ties with major technology partners on automated networks. A September 17 agreement with Microsoft expanded their cooperation, linking the Nokia Data Suite with Microsoft Fabric to create a unified data foundation for AI-driven operations in telecom networks.

Trials of AI-RAN radio technology running on NVIDIA platforms are also underway, involving operators such as A1 Group, TPG Telecom and Zain Saudi. According to Nokia, the tests produced a spectral efficiency improvement of more than 20 percent.

On the defense front, Nokia Defense signed a memorandum of understanding with C3IA on September 16 to modernize the British defense sector, covering areas including tactical communications, sensors and edge computing.

What to Watch on October 22

The next scheduled milestone for shareholders arrives on October 22, 2026, when Nokia reports third-quarter and nine-month results. The interim report will show how the recent initiatives are translating into operating performance, with margin trends under particular scrutiny as the market weighs whether the business can back up this year's share price gains with solid earnings.
