Nokia's AI-RAN Push Meets Its First Real Deadline: SoftBank, 2027
Published on 10/22/2026 at 06:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deNokia used the eve of its quarterly report to put some flesh on the bones of its NVIDIA partnership, unveiling new AI features for radio networks alongside a jointly developed sovereign platform for agent-based AI in network operations. The timing is no accident: with third-quarter and nine-month figures for 2026 due on 22 October 2026 and an analyst webcast scheduled for 15:00 Finnish time, investors now have two very different yardsticks to apply — technical progress on one side, hard financials on the other.
The announcement spans more than AI-assisted radio signal processing. Nokia is extending its approach to cover the autonomous operation of telecom networks as well, so the package touches both the technical layer of the radio access network and the operational control sitting above it. What matters for shareholders is the gap between capabilities on a slide and capabilities in a live network, and on that front the company points to operator trials and deployments that it says are moving toward commercial use.
A named customer, a fixed date
The most tangible reference point is SoftBank. The two companies agreed on Tuesday to run a commercial AI-RAN field trial in Japan in 2027, bringing together Nokia's anyRAN software, SoftBank's AITRAS platform and NVIDIA's Aerial RAN Computer. That combination gives the collaboration a specific operator and a defined technical stack — but it also makes the status unambiguous. The trial is agreed, not delivered. It sits in the future, and it represents a step toward commercial deployment rather than proof that one has already happened.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?
Nokia's own framing leans on the same distinction. Customer tests and implementations are said to be advancing, which lends the announcement more practical grounding than a standalone product launch would carry. Even so, progress in trials is not the same as a contribution to revenue, and the market will eventually want the latter.
The stock moved — but why?
Shares gained 3.0% yesterday, a move that coincided with the AI announcement and offers a plausible explanation for it. Plausible is not the same as confirmed, and no direct link between the two has been established. The durable substance of the news remains Nokia's advance toward commercial applications, with ongoing operator trials and the SoftBank field test as the concrete markers.
That leaves the financial picture as the next real test. The upcoming report covers the third quarter and the January-to-September 2026 period, and it is there that any economic re-rating of the AI initiatives would have to show up — in measurable contributions to sales and earnings. Until then, the share price gain accompanies genuine technical strides without prejudging whether they pay off.
