Nokia's AI Order Book Looks Bigger Than Its Factory Floor
Published on 10/21/2026 at 13:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deBank of America sees more than EUR 2 billion of AI-related orders heading Nokia's way, yet the same note flags production capacity as the handbrake on growth. That tension — demand running ahead of what Nokia can physically ship — is the frame investors should bring to the company's third-quarter and nine-month 2026 results, due on 22 October 2026.
The US bank reiterated its buy rating on the Finnish network equipment maker on Monday with a price target of 16 euros, according to media reports. Its order forecast is an expectation, not a figure Nokia has reported. A conference call with analysts is scheduled for the same day as the release, giving management a second platform to address the demand-versus-delivery question beyond the printed numbers.
A trial, a divestment and a share award walk into a portfolio
Three separate announcements have landed in quick succession, and each sits at a different stage of completion — a distinction that matters more than the headlines suggest.
The most concrete of the trio came on Thursday, when Nokia transferred 2,142,361 of its own shares free of charge to participants in its share-based compensation programmes. Following the allocation, the company still held 81,161,716 treasury shares. That is a completed corporate action tied to employee remuneration, with no bearing on the progress of any customer project.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?
Yesterday brought a commercial AI-RAN field trial agreement with SoftBank in Japan, slated for 2027 under live commercial network traffic conditions. The setup pairs Nokia's anyRAN software with SoftBank's AITRAS platform and NVIDIA technology. It is a test in a commercial network, not a commercial rollout — the real-world traffic element is part of the experiment itself, not evidence of an expansion already built out.
Roughly a week earlier, Nokia agreed to sell its Enterprise Campus Edge business to AURELIUS. Completion is expected in the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. No transaction value was disclosed. Here the sale agreement exists; the closing does not.
The fibre card and the calendar
A flexible fibre line card unveiled around the same time points to yet another future step: general availability is planned for 2027, with the product designed to support multiple PON generations on every port. Announcement and availability are thus separated by more than a year.
Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Set against all this, the 22 October interim report becomes the nearest hard datapoint. It must disentangle the running business, the anticipated AI orders and the longer-dated projects. Whether Nokia can capture AI demand is only half the investor question; the other half is how quickly capacity can convert that demand into revenue. That caveat sits behind even the most bullish analyst view — and it is the one the October figures will begin to answer.
