Nokia Draws a Line Around Its Drone Unit as Campus Edge Sale Takes Shape

Nokia says its drone business stays in-house as the Enterprise Campus Edge divestment to AURELIUS proceeds, with completion targeted for the first half of 2027.

Nokia has moved to clarify the perimeter of its agreed divestment of Enterprise Campus Edge, confirming that its drone business will not be handed over to AURELIUS. The distinction matters more than it might first appear: the transaction covers a specific slice of Nokia's private-networks activities, not the whole of them.

Nokia Drone Networks stays inside the group and remains under strategic review, according to media reports cited by the company. That status cuts both ways — it signals neither a permanent commitment to the unit nor a follow-on sale. The Modular Private Wireless platform, by contrast, does form part of the transaction. Even so, Nokia said it intends to keep deploying that platform alongside radio access network solutions for larger-scale private networks, making clear the deal is no full retreat from the field. Ownership of a platform and its continued use in Nokia's own offerings are two separate questions.

A Deal Signed, Not Yet Sealed

The Enterprise Campus Edge agreement was struck on Tuesday. Completion is targeted for the first half of 2027, subject to customary conditions and regulatory approvals — and, per the company, employee consultations. Nokia has not disclosed the financial terms. For investors, that leaves a strategic direction without an economic yardstick: the scope of the transaction can be assessed with some precision, but no sale proceeds or financial contribution can be quantified from the announcement alone. A signed agreement is not a completed transfer of ownership.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

Two other announcements sit alongside the divestment. On 12 October, Nokia unveiled a flexible fiber network card capable of supporting multiple PON generations up to 50G on every connection, with general availability planned for 2027. And on Friday, Nokia and SoftBank agreed a commercial AI-RAN field trial in Japan for 2027, running Nokia's anyRAN software on SoftBank's AITRAS platform. Both are forward-looking commitments — a product launch and a future test — rather than reports of business results already booked.

Friday's Slide Belongs to the Tape

Nokia shares fell 4.5% on Friday, caught in a broad technology selloff. AP linked the pressure to worries about the durability of artificial intelligence investment and the debt financing behind it, with concerns over higher interest rates also weighing on tech and semiconductor names. No fresh operational announcement from Nokia stood behind the move. The distinction is central for anyone assessing the stock: doubts about the AI spending boom are a market theme, not a verdict on Nokia's reported business performance. The agreed divestment and the fiber launch are concrete operational steps; Friday's losses came from the wider investment backdrop, and the two levels should be kept apart.

October 22 as the Next Marker

The company-specific date to watch is 22 October 2026, when Nokia publishes results for the third quarter and for the first nine months of the year. That report will set operating progress against a market environment that is currently doing the damage. Until then, the picture is one of parallel strands: a weak trading backdrop, a divestment agreed but not closed, and continued activity in private networks. The clarification on the drone unit chiefly guards against reading too much into the sale's scope — it is no evidence of a wholesale exit from the applications concerned.
