Nike's Q1 footwear revenue fell 6% and Greater China sales dropped 26%, as analysts cut targets and the stock trades 42% lower this year.

Nike is betting that a fresh slate of competition running shoes can do what its balance sheet currently cannot: convince investors that the worst is behind it. The sportswear giant unveiled a new performance running line meant to reinvigorate a category where rivals have been steadily gaining ground, with the Apex slated for January 2027 and the Swooshfly following in February 2027. The push targets the company's heritage running business, an area that has come under mounting competitive pressure as challengers claw back territory among serious runners.

The timing is hardly accidental. Confidence in Nike's ability to innovate is being tested just as the company embarks on a sweeping operational overhaul.

A Leaner Machine, With a Hefty Price Tag

That overhaul now has a name: "Pace." Under the program, Nike will reorganize around three geographic regions and further streamline its organization, with decisions on affected roles beginning in 2027. Management has attached ambitious financial targets to the restructuring, projecting cumulative savings of roughly $2.5 billion by fiscal 2031. Changed working models are expected to require fewer roles overall, though specific decisions on which positions will be cut won't come until calendar year 2027.

Alongside the cost program, the company issued a subdued outlook, forecasting a revenue decline in the high single-digit percentage range. A new campus in Bengaluru, reported by The Times of India, is set to absorb existing employees in several phases starting in fiscal 2028.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nike?

The Core Business Is Shifting Under Nike's Feet

Nike's fiscal first-quarter disclosures, filed with U.S. regulators on Friday, laid bare the scale of the challenge. Footwear revenue fell 6% year over year to $7.0 billion, while apparel managed a 2% gain to $3.4 billion — a split that underscores how much pressure the company's traditional profit engine is under.

The pain extends well beyond shoes. Converse, Nike's subsidiary brand, saw revenue collapse 28% to $263 million. NIKE Direct, the company's own distribution channel, lost momentum with a currency-neutral decline of 9% to $4.1 billion. Greater China proved the sharpest drag of all: sales there dropped 26% on a currency-neutral basis to $1.18 billion.

Analysts Cut Targets as Skepticism Deepens

The quarterly numbers triggered a wave of downgrades and target reductions. Jay Sole of UBS reaffirmed his neutral rating on Friday but slashed his price target to $34 from $42. Morgan Stanley was blunter the same day, keeping its underweight stance and trimming its target to $27 from $31. Bank of America had already moved on September 25, downgrading the stock from neutral to underperform and cutting its target to $30 from $47, citing a turnaround taking longer than expected and weaker profit prospects.

Nike at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The market's doubts are visible in the share price. Nike currently trades at €30.25, down 42% since the start of the year. The stock had earlier touched a fresh 52-week low of €27.91 on Friday before recovering modestly, recently changing hands at €30.41 for a gain of 1.0% on the day.

Whether the new running shoe generation can spark the customer turnaround Nike needs will be decisive for how the stock is valued in the months ahead. For now, the company is pointing to its investor day on November 16–17, 2026, for a fuller strategic picture.
