Night-Time Coughing Rises With Air Pollution Even When Cities Meet WHO Limits, 500-Day Sleep Study Finds

Researchers tracking the sleep of roughly 100,000 people across 32 cities have found that particulate matter in the air disrupts rest far below the thresholds regulators treat as safe. The work, a joint effort by the University of Cambridge, Tsinghua University and the sleep-tracking company Sleep Cycle, was reported in mid-September 2026 by outlets including euronews.com and zeit-heute.de.
At the centre of the findings is a simple relationship: for every additional 10 µg/m³ of PM2.5 — fine particles small enough to reach deep into the lungs — coughing episodes among sleepers rose by an average of 2.4 percent over the following five days.
What the dataset covered
The conclusions rest on an unusually large body of real-world evidence rather than a controlled laboratory setting. Sleep Cycle app recordings from about 100,000 users, gathered over 500 days, fed into the analysis. According to zeit-heute.de, the study window spanned roughly 18 months, with an average of some 98,000 users contributing data on any given day.
Those users were spread across 32 cities in twelve countries, a list that includes German population centres such as Berlin and Leipzig. By pairing the smartphone app's acoustic recordings with local air-quality measurements, the team was able to line up night-time symptoms against short-term swings in pollution almost as they happened.
A wide gap between cities
Pollution levels varied enormously from one metropolis to the next. Across 13 European cities, daily average PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 5.47 µg/m³ in Uppsala, Sweden, to 14.70 µg/m³ in Bergamo, Italy, with the European average sitting at 10.58 µg/m³.
Asian cities recorded far heavier loads. Beijing averaged 40.97 µg/m³, while Shanghai came in at 33.48 µg/m³.
Specific environmental disasters produced even sharper effects. During Los Angeles's 2025 wildfire season, a 10 µg/m³ jump in PM2.5 was linked to a ten percent increase in night-time coughing — a sign that extreme episodes translate directly into disturbed breathing and poorer sleep for affected residents.
Below the recommended ceiling
The World Health Organization advises a 24-hour average PM2.5 limit of no more than 15 µg/m³, to be exceeded on no more than three to four days a year.
What the joint analysis makes clear, though, is that harm does not wait for serious breaches of that figure. The rise in night-time coughing was detectable at concentrations still under the WHO's recommended daily average of 15 µg/m³.
The implication is that air quality levels commonly judged moderate or acceptable can still place a burden on the respiratory system during the hours when the body is supposed to be recovering.
