Nel ASA Wins $12 Million US Electrolyser Order as Analysts Trim Targets and Cash Burn Persists
Published on 10/19/2026 at 04:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deNel ASA has secured a roughly USD 12 million order for containerised PEM electrolysers and associated services from an unnamed US technology company, a deal announced on Tuesday that gives the hydrogen specialist a delivery horizon stretching into 2027. The contract, booked through subsidiary Nel Hydrogen US, is concrete enough to underpin future revenue but does nothing to ease the immediate pressure on a business still burning cash.
That distinction — between demand won and revenue booked — sits at the heart of the investment case. Analysts have been recalibrating accordingly. One research house cut its price target sharply to NOK 2.38 from NOK 3.82, while keeping a constructive stance: the rating now points to adding to positions rather than the outright buy it previously carried. The positive direction survives; the valuation framework has been scaled back considerably.
A Backlog That Outpaces the P&L
The third-quarter 2026 figures, released on Thursday, lay bare the gap. Order intake jumped 339% year on year to NOK 253 million, and the order backlog climbed 34% to NOK 1,314 million. Revenue from customer contracts, by contrast, fell 63% to NOK 112 million over the same period.
The divergence runs through the business lines as well. PEM revenue advanced while the alkaline segment suffered a steep decline — strength in one division proving insufficient to offset weakness in the other. Net loss for the quarter came in at NOK 141 million, with EBITDA at minus NOK 93 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?
For investors, the takeaway is that a fuller order book describes the scale of business won, not cash already collected. The US contract is a firmer commitment than a mere letter of intent, yet its 2027 delivery date remains an estimate rather than a guarantee of executed shipment.
Liquidity Is Where the Story Gets Tested
Cash is the metric that matters most in the near term. Nel ended the quarter with NOK 1,078 million in cash and cash equivalents, while operating cash flow was negative NOK 197 million for the three months. The balance sheet provides a cushion, but the direction of travel is clear.
What would change the narrative is execution: shipping the expanded backlog and narrowing the operational cash outflow. Neither is yet evidenced by the order alone. A growing pipeline is a welcome signal, but it substitutes for neither recognised revenue nor an improving operating cash flow.
The trimmed price target captures this tension precisely — a lower bar for valuation, set against a business whose order momentum has yet to translate into financial delivery. The next tangible checkpoint is the expected shipment of the US order in 2027.
