Nel ASA Trades a Revenue Problem for an Order Book It Cannot Yet Bill
Published on 11/03/2026 at 10:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deNel ASA's third-quarter 2026 report card splits cleanly in two: demand is surging, but the money is not yet following it through the door. Order intake at the Norwegian hydrogen specialist jumped 339% to NOK 253 million, lifting the backlog to NOK 1,314 million — a figure that flatters the top line only if those contracts eventually convert into delivered revenue.
For now, they are not. Revenue from customer contracts fell 63% year on year to NOK 112 million, a decline the company attributes to weak activity in its alkaline business. The EBITDA loss came in at NOK -93 million, and the net loss reached NOK -141 million. Cash and cash equivalents stood at NOK 1,078 million at the quarter's close — a cushion, not a cure.
A Delivery Date Is Not a Sale
The most concrete proof of future billings arrived roughly three weeks ago, when Nel Hydrogen US booked an order from an unnamed US-headquartered global technology group. The package covers several containerised PEM electrolysers plus associated services and carries a value of about USD 12 million. Delivery is expected in 2027. That caveat matters: the contract is signed, but the cash sits in the future.
A second, looser arrangement deserves separate treatment. Nel's collaboration with Rheinmetall, agreed around the same time, is a scoping exercise — the two firms are examining decentralised production of renewable synthetic fuels, with Nel contributing electrolyser technology while Rheinmetall brings its Giga-PtX concept and system-integration know-how. A letter of intent carries a different weight than a placed order with a delivery window, and investors should not price them alike.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?
New Hands at the Wheel
The leadership handover lands squarely in this contradictory stretch of the business. Nel has named Morten Holum to succeed Håkon Volldal as chief executive, taking over no later than 1 May 2027. Until then, finance chief Kjell Christian Bjørnsen will serve as interim group CEO, with Torbjørn Berg — previously VP Finance — stepping in as interim CFO. The arrangement organises the transition; it does not, on its own, move any earnings needle.
Alongside the personnel news, Nel is building out its first production line for pressure-driven alkaline technology at Herøya. The plan targets 500 MW of annual capacity by the end of 2026, with an upgrade to 1 GW per year slated for 2027. Those are manufacturing capabilities on paper, not revenue already booked.
The Test Investors Should Apply
What ties the quarter together is a simple gap between pipeline and profit-and-loss. A rising order book sharpens the view of future revenue; it neither replaces delivery nor proves Nel can operate more profitably at higher volumes. A revenue recovery would be a first step — a more convincing picture would require losses to shrink at the same time.
Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The higher order intake is an encouraging signal, and the Herøya build-out and new leadership give it a framework. But weak billings and a negative EBITDA cap how much that signal can claim about a turnaround already achieved. The number of announced projects will not settle the question; revenue and earnings will.
