Nel ASA's PEM Business Grows 65% While Group Revenue Drops 63%: Inside the Order-to-Income Gap
Published on 10/19/2026 at 13:53 | Editorial boerse-global.deNel ASA closed the third quarter of 2026 with NOK 1,078 million in liquid funds — a cushion that offers breathing room but says nothing about whether the company can turn its swelling order book into billable business. The Norwegian hydrogen specialist reported customer contract revenue of NOK 112 million for the period, down 63% year on year, alongside an EBITDA of minus NOK 93 million and a net loss of NOK 141 million.
Those headline figures frame the central question facing investors: how much faith should the future order pipeline command while current earnings are contracting so sharply?
Demand and Deliveries Are Moving in Opposite Directions
Order intake jumped 339% year on year to NOK 253 million, and the backlog reached NOK 1,314 million. That divergence — orders surging while revenue shrinks — captures the timing problem at the heart of the Nel story. A fuller order book improves the starting position for future sales, but it cannot be conflated with business already booked.
The EBITDA comparison sharpens the picture: minus NOK 93 million in Q3 2026 against minus NOK 37 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Cash on hand does not offset that deterioration. Nor can financial runway be inferred from the balance sheet and loss metrics alone.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?
PEM Is Already Carrying Part of the Load
Not every segment is shrinking. PEM revenue climbed 65% to NOK 89 million in the third quarter, giving Nel at least one division with expanding business even as group sales fell away. That internal growth is the clearest evidence that demand for Nel's technology is translating into income somewhere.
The contrast with Alkaline is stark. Revenue there collapsed 91% to NOK 23 million, a decline far too large for PEM's advance to offset at group level. Investors therefore face a risk that goes beyond isolated order delays: continued weakness in Alkaline could mask progress at PEM, in which case a recovery in one segment would not amount to a recovery for the company as a whole.
A US Order With a 2027 Delivery Date
Roughly a week before the quarterly update, Nel Hydrogen US announced an order from an unnamed US technology customer worth about USD 12 million. The contract covers several containerised PEM electrolysers plus associated services, with delivery expected in 2027. It is a firmer commitment than a letter of intent — but the revenue lands in the future, not the current quarter.
That order could serve as a concrete test of how recent PEM demand converts into business. A single delivery, however, would not prove a group-wide turnaround in earnings.
Rheinmetall: An Intent, Not an Order
A separate announcement around the same time deserves different treatment. Nel and Rheinmetall disclosed a declaration of intent to explore decentralised production of low-carbon synthetic fuels, combining Nel's electrolyser technology with Rheinmetall's Giga-PtX concept. The arrangement is non-binding; any further steps require new agreements, and it does not constitute a firm order.
Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Here lies the line investors need to draw. Orders rest on a more durable footing than possible partnerships. Whether either translates into economic improvement must ultimately show up in revenue and profit.
What Would Confirm the Bull Case
For a sustained recovery to take hold, Nel must convert its backlog into growing sales and narrower losses. Growth at the top line alone would not suffice: more deliveries at an unchanged loss level would only partly validate hopes of a turn. The stronger order intake is a starting point for analysis, not its final verdict.
Execution is the yardstick. If Nel keeps funnelling its enlarged PEM business into revenue and gradually offsets pressure from other segments, the higher order intake could feed a broader operating stabilisation. If conversion stalls or Alkaline weakness dominates, the optimistic reading of the backlog loses weight. The scheduled US delivery stands as one tangible checkpoint — a chance to show how recent PEM demand becomes business, though not on its own proof of a company-wide earnings recovery.
