Nebius Stock: A Cheaper Balance Sheet, a Pricier Multiple, and the Financing Test In Between

Sereda lifted Nebius to Buy and kept CoreWeave at Hold, favoring Nebius's lighter debt load even as the stock fell 3.9% on buildout funding worries.

Nebius drew a fresh endorsement on Thursday as investor Sereda lifted the AI cloud provider from "Hold" to "Buy," while leaving rival CoreWeave at "Hold," according to media reports. The call lands on a day when the stock slipped 3.9% amid mounting unease over how the sector funds its infrastructure buildout — a reminder that an upgrade and a selloff can arrive on the same afternoon without contradicting each other.

The two names sit at opposite ends of the leverage spectrum. Nebius carries $10.2 billion in debt against $8 billion in cash, a ratio that gives it meaningfully more liquidity cushion than CoreWeave, which owes $51.6 billion while holding just $5.5 billion. That gap is the backbone of Sereda's preference. It is not, however, proof that Nebius can expand without tapping markets again.

Debt Service Is Where the Comparison Bites

Raw borrowings tell only part of the story; the drag of servicing them matters just as much. CoreWeave reported $679 million in operating cash flow for the second quarter of 2026 against $640 million in interest payments — a spread thin enough to show how heavily financing consumes the cash the business generates.

Nebius's contracted backlog adds another layer. The company lists remaining performance obligations of $37.5 billion to $40 billion, a figure that describes work promised rather than revenue booked or profit earned. Converting those commitments into delivered service and real earnings is the open question, and a healthier cash-to-debt position does not answer it. A report published Thursday underscored the point: Nebius remains deeply unprofitable.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

A Fourfold Premium Leaves Little Room

Valuation is where the trade-off sharpens. On an enterprise-value-to-EBITDA basis, Nebius changes hands at roughly four times CoreWeave's expected multiple. Sereda's upgrade therefore sits alongside a substantial relative premium, one that prices in considerable execution.

The backdrop has not helped. Thursday's weakness followed pressure a day earlier tied to worries about AI valuations and the financial sustainability of data center construction. A disputed report on OpenAI's projected revenue also weighed on so-called neocloud stocks, though its contested nature makes it a shaky basis for judging Nebius specifically.

What the market is really asking is narrower and fairer: building more capacity requires more than a convincing technical story — the financing has to hold up economically. Rising rate anxiety and pickier lenders have shifted attention from growth potential to its cost. That shift, more than any single headline, explains the move.

Rotterdam Ambitions and a Signed Intent

Wednesday's expansion news with Volt illustrates the tension. Nebius signed a letter of intent covering a significant share of capacity at a planned AI gigafactory in Rotterdam. Volt would develop and build the site; financial terms were not disclosed. The arrangement signals ambition but offers no yardstick for its economics — a letter of intent is neither a closed contract nor a valuation of its conditions.

Operationally, there is concrete progress to weigh. Nebius announced NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud status on NVIDIA HGX B300 for training workloads on Thursday, and on October 1 it acquired Inferize, a specialist in inference optimization, to strengthen the Token Factory platform for production deployments. The certification addresses training; the acquisition addresses model deployment — different fronts in the same buildout. Neither came with disclosed financial terms, so their strategic purpose is visible while their economic contribution is not.

Nebius at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Analyst sentiment has been constructive elsewhere too. Rosenblatt Securities initiated coverage of Nebius on October 7 with a Buy rating and a $304 price target, according to media reports — an optimistic view, not a guarantee. Recent weakness does not automatically invalidate that call, just as a high target does not dissolve questions about buildout costs and funding.

For investors, the calculus is straightforward. Nebius offers the friendlier debt-to-liquidity profile and a deep contractual pipeline; the richer multiple leaves less margin for disappointment. The real test lies not in growth alone, but in whether that growth converts into a financially convincing business.
