Nebius shares fell 12% yesterday, and the proximate cause was not a company-specific disclosure. Reuters reported that concerns over CoreWeave's debt load spilled over into its rival, part of a sector-wide selloff in AI infrastructure names. Inflation data that hardened expectations for higher interest rates added a second layer of pressure. Two worries — a prominent competitor's leverage and a potentially tougher rate environment — converged on the same trading session.

That distinction matters. A shared financing risk can drag on several stocks at once without any of their underlying operations changing that day. For Nebius, the industry backdrop became the price driver.

Growth Was Never the Doubt

The operating story has been genuinely strong. In an earlier quarter, Nebius posted AI cloud revenue of $575 million, up 514% year over year, at a 50% adjusted EBITDA margin. Those figures explain the stock's appeal: a fast-scaling business with fat adjusted operating margins.

They do not answer the question that now dominates the debate — how much cash remains after building the infrastructure that growth requires. An EBITDA margin is not proof that expansion funds itself. In that same quarter, capital expenditure reached $5.7 billion against group revenue of $582.3 million. Capacity buildout was consuming far more capital than the business was then generating in sales.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

None of this automatically indicts the business model. It does set a high bar for execution. New capacity has to come online on time and then convert into revenue, which makes permitting, construction and schedule risk central to the valuation rather than peripheral.

Commitments Are Not Yet Cash

Nebius has reported obligations exceeding $40 billion and expects more than $9 billion in customer prepayments for 2026. The prepayments deserve particular scrutiny: they could contribute meaningfully before the corresponding services are fully delivered.

Backlog and expected cash inflows remain different things. Anyone who mentally equates the two with money already earned underestimates the distance between demand and capital recovery. A large order book can make growth visible; execution is what turns it into an economically viable business. Management, for its part, plans to add more than 1 gigawatt of capacity per year from 2027 — a task that goes well beyond signing up more customers. The buildout must be financed, approved and delivered.

The Credit Market Has Reset the Bar

Why investors are asking these questions more sharply right now is visible in credit markets. According to Goldman Sachs, risk premiums on US high-yield bonds with AI exposure widened by 25 basis points on Tuesday and Wednesday, reaching 360 basis points over Treasuries. Financing anxiety around CoreWeave is coloring perceptions of other neocloud operators such as Nebius. That does not imply identical financial positions — but it explains why capital intensity is being viewed more critically across the group.

The selloff, then, is best read as a change of yardstick. The market now wants a credible path to funding growth, not growth alone. The decisive test for Nebius is whether customer prepayments, capacity buildout and later revenue line up in time.

Nebius at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Gartner Adds a Longer Shadow

The debate gained extra edge from Gartner, which warned on Wednesday that more than 80% of neocloud providers could cease independent operations by 2030. Nebius belongs to that sector. The forecast describes a possible structural shakeout; it is neither a specific prediction about Nebius nor a claim that every affected provider will go insolvent. The wording concerns independent business operations, and reading it as an immediate failure of Nebius goes beyond what was said. Still, the warning is relevant to how the stock is framed: it questions the long-term stand-alone viability of many providers and sits alongside the growth narrative rather than replacing it.

An NVIDIA Tie-Up and a Bullish Call, on a Different Plane

Nebius also announced an expanded education partnership with NVIDIA yesterday, including jointly developed AI courses, NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute offerings on Nebius Academy, and hands-on workshops using Nebius infrastructure at NVIDIA GTC Berlin. It is a concrete step in developer training — but no answer to the debt-and-rates worries that dominated the session. The two pieces of news operate on different levels: an expanded offering on one side, the sector's financial durability on the other.

The optimistic analyst view belongs in the same tension. Rosenblatt Securities initiated coverage of Nebius on October 8 with a Buy rating and a $304 price target. That documents a positive take on the shares; yesterday's rout shows how forcefully sector-wide financing concerns can shape the valuation regardless. Nebius can notch operational progress and still suffer a re-rating of the neocloud sector — both have to be held in view at once.
