The arithmetic of artificial intelligence infrastructure is unforgiving, and Nebius Group is living proof. The company's second-quarter 2026 results, released on August 12, delivered the kind of top-line explosion that most growth stories only dream of — yet the shares slipped 3.0 percent to 217.90 euros the following session, a pullback that looks less like a verdict on the numbers and more like a pause for breath after a ferocious run. The stock had closed the prior day at 224.55 euros, and even after the dip, it remains up 32 percent on the week and 196 percent over the past year.

Revenue for the quarter came in at 582.3 million dollars, a 454 percent surge from the year-ago period and comfortably ahead of the 572.75 million dollars that LSEG-compiled consensus had penciled in. The AI Cloud segment did the heavy lifting, with sales climbing 514 percent to 574.9 million dollars — roughly 98 percent of the entire business. Adjusted EBITDA reached 236.2 million dollars, good for a 41 percent margin, while the AI segment alone posted a 50 percent EBITDA margin.

What makes those figures sustainable, management argues, is the order book. Nebius signed four major cloud contracts during the quarter, each averaging more than a billion dollars in total value, and confirmed a multi-year deal with Reflection AI worth over a billion dollars that locks in compute capacity through 2029. The company now reports a backlog exceeding 40 billion dollars. Pricing power is evident in the terms: long-term contracts fetch 20 to 25 million dollars per megawatt, while short-term spot prices are running at 40 to 50 million dollars.

That demand visibility is what underpins the aggressive expansion plan. Nebius raised its contracted power capacity target for year-end 2026 from 4 to 5 gigawatts and reaffirmed full-year revenue guidance of 3.0 to 3.4 billion dollars at roughly a 40 percent adjusted EBITDA margin. The cost of that ambition, however, is staggering. Second-quarter capital expenditures hit 5.7 billion dollars, well above the 4.7 billion dollars analysts had expected, with the bulk going toward GPU procurement and data center construction. For the full year, the company plans investments between 20 and 25 billion dollars — nearly ten times its quarterly revenue — and intends to add over a gigawatt of capacity annually from 2027 onward.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

The financing burden is the crux of the bull-bear debate. On the supportive side, customer prepayments are expected to bring in more than 9 billion dollars in 2026, covering 50 to 60 percent of the investment plan. Nebius also notes that these advance payments have compressed the expected payback period on deployed capital to 22 months. The company will nonetheless need to expand its asset-backed financing beyond the existing 775 million dollars to bridge the gap, and that reliance on continuous capital access is precisely what skeptics seize upon.

The bears have ammunition beyond the balance sheet. Under GAAP accounting, Nebius recorded a net loss of 190.4 million dollars for the quarter, a reminder that the adjusted figures flatter the underlying picture. Short interest exceeds 20 percent of shares outstanding, and investor Michael Burry has reportedly built short positions at prices around 212 euros. The annualized 30-day volatility sits at roughly 176 percent — a figure that underscores how routinely this stock swings. DA Davidson added to the caution on Tuesday, cutting its price target from 250 to 175 dollars while maintaining a Neutral rating, citing potential construction delays at the Vineland, New Jersey data center campus that could weigh on 2026 execution.

Supply chain risk compounds the financial strain. Nebius is heavily dependent on high-end hardware, particularly Nvidia components, and any shortage there could push the 5-gigawatt target out. The company's own guidance suggests it expects to reach an annualized revenue run rate of 7 to 9 billion dollars by year-end — a figure that, if achieved, would likely force a re-rating of the current 42.49 billion euro market capitalization.

Institutional conviction, meanwhile, continues to build. BlackRock increased its stake by 16.04 percent through the end of June, holding roughly 11.5 million Class A shares. Goldman Sachs disclosed a 10.5 percent position, representing more than 23 million Class A shares, and Janus Henderson raised its holding by 14.9 percent in the first quarter. These accumulations suggest that for every short seller betting on a stumble, there is a large asset manager willing to underwrite the build-out.

The technical picture offers little comfort for either camp. At 217.90 euros, the stock sits 17 percent below its 52-week high of 261.00 euros but remains well above its 50-day moving average of 193.19 euros — a level the secondary source pegs at 193.30 euros, reflecting minor data discrepancies between reporting periods. The 200-day average of 125.71 euros marks the line in the sand: a break below that would signal the growth narrative itself is in question. For now, the market's verdict is that Nebius has the demand, the contracts, and the pricing power to justify its valuation — provided it can keep the financing machine running and the data centers coming online on schedule.
