Munich Re Shares Retreat 4% as JPMorgan Turns Neutral on 2027 Renewal Pricing
Published on 11/08/2026 at 06:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deMunich Re's stock fell 4.0% on Friday, caught in a broader pullback across the European insurance sector, after JPMorgan downgraded the German reinsurer from "Overweight" to "Neutral." The broker left its price target unchanged at EUR 590.
The downgrade landed alongside a wider flight from riskier assets that weighed on insurers globally, according to Reuters. The European insurance sector shed 2.6% on the day. JPMorgan's move also hit Hannover Rück, with dpa-AFX reporting that both reinsurers came under pressure following the broker's decisions.
A Quiet Hurricane Season Points to Softer Renewals
At the heart of JPMorgan's caution is expected pricing pressure in the 2027 renewal round. Analyst Kamran Hossain pointed to a comparatively benign 2026 hurricane season as a key factor behind the softer outlook for reinsurance contracts covering the coming year. The broker sees margin compression looming, particularly in property-casualty reinsurance, and views the stock's further upside as limited.

The downgrade comes despite a strong run of company news from Munich Re. Roughly two weeks ago the group raised its 2026 net profit guidance to EUR 6.6 billion from EUR 6.3 billion, and reported a preliminary third-quarter net profit of about EUR 1.7 billion. For the first nine months of the year, group earnings reached EUR 5.7 billion.
Buyback and a Leaner Board
Alongside the improved outlook, Munich Re has been returning capital to shareholders. In a disclosure made about three weeks ago, the company reported buying back 97,500 of its own shares during the period covered. Since the programme began, roughly 3.2 million shares had been repurchased by the end of that reporting window.
The group's management board is also set to shrink. Reuters reported about three weeks ago that Clarisse Kopff would leave the company at the end of October, with her board position to remain permanently vacant. Thomas Blunck is to take on her responsibilities in addition to his own, reducing the board from eleven members to ten from November.
Investors will get the full picture on 12 November, when Munich Re publishes its detailed quarterly results. According to the company calendar, the release is scheduled for around 7:30 a.m. CET.
