MSCI has redrawn the eligibility rules for its Global Investable Market Indexes, and the change could cost the iShares MSCI World ETF one of its more unusual holdings. Companies with no meaningful operating business — classified as "non-operating companies" — will no longer qualify for inclusion, the index provider disclosed on 16 October.

The most closely watched candidate for removal is Strategy, the firm formerly known as MicroStrategy. It currently sits in the MSCI World, but its business model has made it a fixture on media lists of likely casualties under the tighter criteria. Should it be dropped, the ETF would be compelled to unwind its position in the stock entirely.

MSCI frames the overhaul as a push to sharpen the structure of its global benchmark and ensure that only actively operating companies drive its performance, limiting distortions from firms built around asset-management structures.

Key Dates for Investors

The calendar is already set. MSCI will publish the final roster of companies failing the new admission standards on 11 November — the moment portfolio managers will use to gauge the index's future weighting. Implementation follows shortly after, taking effect after the close on 30 November, when index fund providers must align their holdings with the revised rules. Trading volumes in the affected names typically swell around such rebalancing dates.

A Bruising Session for Global Equities

The ETF's own trading has been choppy. On Thursday the fund shed 1.1% to close at 206.17 USD, leaving it 2.7% below its 52-week high of 211.94 USD. The retreat came as disappointing investment outlooks from the technology sector and fresh geopolitical risks weighed on markets worldwide.

Meta Platforms set the tone, with quarterly figures raising doubts about whether heavy spending on artificial intelligence can pay off. Reuters reported that the company posted a cash outflow for the first time in more than a decade, tied directly to its massive AI infrastructure outlays. Meta also announced the issuance of non-voting shares to raise further capital for its plans.

The fallout rippled across Asia, where South Korean equities fell more than 4% and Japan's Nikkei lost roughly 2%. Investors are growing wary that the cost of AI infrastructure could strain corporate balance sheets for a long stretch without delivering matching earnings gains in the near term.

Oil and the Middle East Add to the Pressure

Selling intensified as tensions escalated in the Middle East. Reports of Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia pushed Brent crude higher, reviving concerns about supply disruptions and adding another drag on developed-market equities. The MSCI All-Country World Index slipped 1.3% in that environment.

The combination of sector-specific anxiety and macro risk prompted investors to rethink positions in riskier assets. Technology names were sold while commodity markets stayed tense, feeding inflation worries once more.

Money Still Flows In

Short-term volatility has not dented appetite for broadly diversified exposure. The iShares MSCI World ETF took in net inflows of 148 million USD on Tuesday, according to media reports. The wider category is drawing cash too: the Investment Company Institute recorded net inflows of more than 5 billion USD into world equity ETFs in the week through 14 October.

BlackRock, in its third-quarter review, said demand for equity ETFs remains robust even as investors grow more selective. Value stocks have gained favor of late, while technology funds saw outflows in mid-October as rising sector leverage made investors warier, Reuters reported. Year to date, the iShares MSCI World ETF still holds a gain of 12%.
