Moderna's Return to Profit Comes With a Delivery Timing Caveat
Published on 11/07/2026 at 14:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deModerna's swing back into the black, reported yesterday alongside a beefed-up full-year outlook, sent the shares up 5.7%. The headline numbers are strong. The question investors now face is how much of that strength is repeatable once a pull-forward of deliveries washes out of the comparison.
For the third quarter of 2026, the vaccine maker posted a net profit of $162 million, reversing a $200 million loss in the same period a year earlier. Revenue climbed 29% to $1.313 billion. On a GAAP basis, net income came in at $0.2 billion, with diluted earnings per share of $0.38.
What drove the quarter
Higher international sales of COVID-19 shots did the heavy lifting, helped along by deliveries tied to government partnerships and by collaboration revenue. Reuters reported that both overseas vaccine demand and partnership payments underpinned the period. Management also attributed part of the top-line gain to shipments pulled forward from the fourth quarter — a detail that makes the following three months the more telling test of underlying demand.
The cost side of the ledger is where the quarter earns its credibility. Research and development spending fell 27% to $583 million. Moderna expects full-year 2026 R&D outlays of roughly $2.7 billion, and it trimmed its guidance for operating expenses by about $0.2 billion. More business at a lower research cost is a more durable form of progress than a revenue surge swallowed whole by spending — provided the pipeline stays productive while the purse strings tighten.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?
Guidance got the same treatment. Moderna now projects 2026 revenue growth of 15% to 25%, up from a prior ceiling of no more than 10%. That upgrade only carries weight if the extra sales survive the trip down to the bottom line after research and other costs.
The longer view is less flattering. Across the first nine months of 2026, Moderna's net loss still totalled $1.963 billion. One profitable quarter improves the starting position; a run of them would change the story.
Beyond COVID
Two developments outside the shot business give the bull case something to stand on. Moderna and Merck are preparing regulatory submissions for intismeran in melanoma after positive trial data. In a Phase 3 study of 1,137 melanoma patients, the combination of intismeran and Keytruda cut the risk of recurrence or death by 42% versus Keytruda alone. Clinical results of that magnitude carry weight; the regulatory filing is the next hurdle, and an approval followed by a commercially viable franchise is what would actually strengthen the long-term investment case.
Separately, the FDA cleared mFLUSIVA in the US, which the company says is its fifth product approved anywhere in the world. Moderna also said on Wednesday that it will present initial Phase 1/2 data on mRNA-2808 in an oral session at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology; the experimental candidate targets relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. That line of research pushes the company's ambitions past infectious disease, though its contribution to valuation will hinge on how the clinical data hold up.
Not every update went Moderna's way. Its norovirus vaccine missed the criteria for early success at an interim analysis, and the company does not plan an additional cohort this season.
The date to circle
An analyst day is scheduled for November 12, 2026, and it arrives with a clear brief: show how a sturdier existing business and a widening product portfolio fit together into one economic engine. The raised annual forecast has to prove itself in operations, and the newer products have to start generating meaningful revenue. Until then, the quarter's delivery timing and the pipeline's regulatory calendar are the two halves of the same judgment call.
