Moderna's Melanoma Readout Is Only Half the Test
Published on 10/22/2026 at 16:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deTwo dates now frame the Moderna story, and they measure entirely different things. On October 24, the company will present full Phase 3 data on intismeran autogene in resected stage IIB–IV melanoma at the ESMO Presidential Symposium, with an investor webcast scheduled the same day. On November 6, it reports third-quarter 2026 results — a date Moderna announced on October 13. Between those two events sits the question investors actually have to answer: how much of the cancer vaccine's promise is already baked into the share price?
The setup has shifted in recent weeks. Merck and Moderna said at the STAT Summit on October 15 that they are preparing a regulatory filing following positive Phase 3 results announced in August. That moves the discussion from a successful trial toward a review process — though preparation and submission remain distinct steps, and neither amounts to an approval decision.
What the Trial Actually Tests
The study, INTerpath-001, compares intismeran autogene given alongside Merck's Keytruda against Keytruda alone in patients whose high-risk melanoma has been surgically removed. That comparator is the crux. A positive overall signal is not the same as a convincing demonstration that adding the vaccine improves on the existing standard of care, and the full results will be judged on exactly that point.
The same distinction applies to the filing. Data that support the companies' confidence in moving toward submission would strengthen the clinical foundation of the story. They would not constitute a regulator's verdict.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?
TD Cowen Doubles Its Target and Keeps Its Rating
Analyst revisions have tracked the rally. TD Cowen's Tyler Van Buren lifted his price target to $90 from $40 while maintaining a Hold rating. The firm also raised its estimate of peak INT revenue in 2035 to roughly $3.4 billion, up from $830 million — a figure that captures potential in both adjuvant melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer.
That combination carries its own message. A far more generous view of the product's commercial potential did not translate into a buy recommendation. Goldman Sachs made a similar move about a week earlier, raising its target to $137 from $120 while keeping a neutral stance. Better expectations, in both cases, arrived without a more aggressive call.
The Rally Has Already Priced In a Lot
Media reports have credited the prospect of full melanoma data with driving much of the advance, and Reuters noted on Friday that investors had turned more cautious after the sharp run-up. On October 16, Moderna came under pressure as profit-taking and valuation concerns set in following the rally, according to media reports.
The risk here is not necessarily a failed study. It is the gap between good data and even higher expectations. A presentation that merely restates the known interpretation carries less weight than details that resolve genuine uncertainties — and a medically favorable result does not guarantee a favorable share-price reaction.
There is a scope issue too. TD Cowen's upgraded estimate spans multiple indications, so a strong melanoma showing would not validate every assumption embedded in it. Treating the October event and the long-term earnings case as one and the same would overstate what a single readout can prove.
Moderna at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Two Lenses, One Decision
If the additional data shore up the long-term earnings thesis, expected future revenue can remain an argument for owning the stock. If the economic interpretation loses credibility instead, the rally by itself offers little support for further confidence.
The sequence matters: clinical clarity first, financial reporting second. Product potential can underpin an investment case, but its valuation still has to answer to the durability of the assumptions beneath it.
