Moderna's Canadian First Comes With a Valuation Question It Can't Yet Answer
Published on 11/06/2026 at 13:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deHealth Canada has cleared two Moderna vaccines in a single stroke, granting approval to mFLUSIVA for seasonal influenza and to mCOFLU, a combined influenza/COVID-19 shot, both for adults aged 50 and over. According to the company, Canada is the first country to greenlight either product. For investors, the milestone shifts the debate: the regulatory box is now ticked, and what matters next is whether these shots can earn their keep against a valuation that has already travelled a long way.
That valuation is the elephant in the room. Moderna shares are up 718% since the start of the year, a run that has raised the bar for every subsequent announcement. Additional approvals will only shore up the lofty multiple if they come with a credible commercial story attached.
A Pipeline With Several Irons in the Fire
The Canadian clearances cover products that are already approved. Alongside them, Moderna is advancing clinical programmes at earlier stages, and the combination could prove valuable — provided the science eventually translates into revenue.
One such thread moved forward on Wednesday, when a WHO advisory group recommended that the experimental Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine mRNA-1469 be included in an efficacy trial. The proposed Phase 2/3 study, known as Tumaini, would run in the Democratic Republic of Congo and remains subject to regulatory approval. CEPI has pledged up to $58.5 million for the development and manufacture of study doses, backing the work as long as the necessary authorisations come through and the programme keeps moving.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?
A second thread concerns mRNA-2808, an experimental therapy for multiple myeloma. Early clinical data from that programme have been selected for an oral presentation at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology, scheduled for 12 December 2026. Expectations around those early findings were among the forces that fed the pre-earnings optimism, according to media reports.
Wall Street Sends Two Different Signals
Analyst action has pulled in opposite directions. Piper Sandler reportedly lifted its price target to $230 from $167 on 26 October, keeping an Overweight rating — a vote for a higher valuation horizon. A day later, William Blair cut Moderna to Market Perform from Outperform, citing the share price run. That downgrade captures the core tension: operational progress can coincide with limited further upside once expectations are already stretched.
October offered a taste of how twitchy sentiment can be. When Moderna and Merck released melanoma study data, Reuters characterised the market reaction as profit-taking after the news landed. Among the concerns was whether the efficacy would carry over to other cancer types — a reminder of how readily investors extrapolate a single trial result across an entire development story.
The Pre-Earnings Stumble
The stock came under pressure yesterday after its strong run into the quarterly update, falling 6.5%. Coverage linked the earlier climb to optimism over early data for the multiple myeloma therapy and the Ebola trial recommendation. That pullback landed on the trading day immediately before the scheduled release.
Moderna at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Moderna had announced on 13 October that it would publish third-quarter 2026 results before the market opened, and a conference call was set for 8:00 a.m. ET. Investors will be listening for whether management puts flesh on the bones of its expectations for the newly approved vaccines. A convincing link between regulatory wins and future business would broaden the foundation of the valuation. If the commercial outlook instead remains dependent on further development successes, the stock continues to carry substantial expectation risk.
For now, the balance is clear enough: pipeline optionality argues in Moderna's favour, but only if clinical progress and commercial execution justify the ground the shares have already covered.
