Moderna shares tore 14% higher on Friday to a fresh 52-week peak of EUR 200.85, capping a rally that has now delivered a staggering 656% gain since the start of the year. Two forces did the heavy lifting: a mechanical re-entry into the Nasdaq-100, and a New York Times report that Washington is preparing a public-private push to accelerate cancer vaccine development.

The index move is the more concrete of the two. Before the opening bell, Moderna stepped into the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100, displacing Warner Bros. Discovery. That migration forces index-tracking funds and ETFs to buy the stock automatically, delivering dependable liquidity without adding a single cent to the company's underlying earnings power.

A Government Blueprint, Seven to Ten Years Out

The second catalyst is more speculative. According to the New York Times, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) intends to launch a partnership between public agencies and private players in December, aimed squarely at speeding up therapeutic cancer vaccines. The first phase would target three notoriously hard-to-treat malignancies: pancreatic, liver and colorectal cancer. Researchers, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, patient groups and nonprofit organizations are all expected to take part.

Whether Moderna is already locked in as a direct partner was not disclosed in the report. What the market seized on instead was the prospect of coordinated federal backing for the entire sector, sending buyers into manufacturers with vaccine-development platforms. Yet government research programs move slowly — participants expect broad clinical adoption only in seven to ten years. Investors are effectively pricing in a distant melody whose financial payoff for Moderna remains far over the horizon.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?

The Oncology Pipeline Carries the Story

The nearer-term hope rests on intismeran autogene, a cancer therapy Moderna is developing with Merck. A Phase 3 trial in high-risk melanoma patients met its primary endpoint, delaying recurrence of the disease. Full data are due to be presented on 24 October at the ESMO congress in Madrid. Those results are scientifically notable and underpin the company's long-term transformation away from being a pure pandemic winner.

Even so, a 656% year-to-date advance has already baked in a scenario in which virtually every clinical development must break the company's way. Setbacks in follow-up studies or delays in the approval process simply are not priced in at these levels. Moderna still holds cash reserves, but development costs continue to weigh heavily on its bottom line.

The Sell Side Isn't Buying the Euphoria

Wall Street is greeting the rally with growing skepticism. Bank of America raised its price target on Friday from USD 170 to USD 200, but kept its rating at a cautious "Neutral." Citigroup drew a harder line, slapping a sell rating on the stock in late September with a target of just USD 80.

The upshot: Moderna's quote has detached from its operating reality. Anyone jumping aboard now is paying top dollar for promises the company will need years to honor. As long as the group keeps posting operating losses, the correction risks outweigh the remaining upside by a wide margin. Ahead of the late-October data presentation, a cool head is the wiser posture.
