Microsoft's Legal Copilot Rollout Collides With UK Regulatory Scrutiny
Published on 10/16/2026 at 16:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deMicrosoft pushed its enterprise AI ambitions into the legal sector this week, unveiling a suite of more than 20 purpose-built legal functions and partner-based plug-ins for Microsoft Copilot. The global general availability announcement, made Thursday, is designed to automate workflows inside law firms and corporate legal departments through tailored assistance tools.
The stock's reaction was muted. During today's European session, Microsoft shares slipped 0.8% to EUR 477.00, leaving the equity roughly 3.1% below its 52-week high of EUR 492.40 — a peak struck only days ago. The previous session had seen the stock close at EUR 481.05, just 2.3% shy of that record, which was set on Tuesday.
Britain Weighs a Special Designation
Even as the product line expands, Microsoft's sales playbook in the UK has drawn regulatory attention. Reuters reports that the Competition and Markets Authority has proposed assigning the company strategic market status in enterprise software — a classification that would hand the watchdog sharper tools to intervene in product design.
At the heart of the review is the bundling of established applications such as Excel and Teams with the newer Copilot services. The authority intends to gather feedback before reaching a final verdict, with a formal decision expected by February. For Microsoft, the central question is how tightly future AI services may be woven into the existing office suite.
Wall Street's Targets Keep Climbing
Regulatory clouds have done little to dampen analyst enthusiasm. Several major banks revised their valuation models on Thursday, according to media reports, in response to the latest AI developments.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?
Citi raised its price target on Microsoft from $600 to $636 while reaffirming a "Buy" rating. Mizuho moved even more aggressively, lifting its target from $510 to $600 and keeping an "Outperform" recommendation. The updated range of Wall Street targets now stretches as high as $675, with market watchers pointing to the monetization potential of Copilot integration in enterprise environments as the key driver.
The bullish revisions continued earlier in the week, when Barclays on Tuesday maintained its "Overweight" rating and raised its target from $512 to $600 ahead of the company's upcoming quarterly report.
Chip Independence and a 2027 Deadline
Beyond software, Microsoft is steadily building out its own silicon roadmap. The company has already flagged production of its Azure Maia 200 processors and has now introduced the Azure Maia 300, with volume deployment slated for 2027. The goal is to scale capacity into the gigawatt range for inference workloads, reducing reliance on external semiconductor suppliers.
A spokesperson also made clear that Azure's leadership has not issued cost-cutting mandates to its teams. Meanwhile, Microsoft has joined forces with Marvell Technology and Oracle to form a working group under the Open Compute Project, aimed at establishing an open specification for integrated hardware security modules — a response to the mounting security demands of hyperscale infrastructure.
Brad Smith, Microsoft's President, used the occasion to call for binding global safety rules and independent audits of new systems, noting that artificial intelligence currently faces fewer safety requirements than ordinary consumer products. He also warned that restrictions on Green Card access for foreign specialists could erode US technological competitiveness — comments that follow the US Department of Labor's decision roughly a week ago to temporarily suspend Microsoft from the PERM labor certification program.
Insider Filing and the October 28 Print
A routine regulatory disclosure surfaced Thursday as well. Amy Coleman, Microsoft's Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, settled 32 shares to cover exercise prices and tax obligations, leaving her directly held stake at 50,925 Microsoft shares.
Investors will get their next hard look at the company's financial health and cloud performance on October 28, when Microsoft reports results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027.
