Microsoft shares slipped 2.1% on Friday to close at EUR 470.75, caught in a broad selloff that swept through the US technology sector. The retreat was driven by mounting investor anxiety over the scale and debt financing of the industry's artificial-intelligence buildout, with rising bond yields adding further pressure on tech names. According to an AP report, the majority of tech stocks in the wide-ranging S&P 500 finished in the red.

Beneath the surface, the concerns are concrete. Investors are questioning whether data-center operators can generate returns quickly enough to service existing obligations as financing costs climb. Reuters also pointed to worries about intensifying Chinese competition as a factor weighing on sentiment.

The pullback interrupts an otherwise powerful run. Despite the weaker end to the week, the stock remains within striking distance of its 52-week high of EUR 492.40, a level it first touched on Tuesday. Since the start of the year, the shares are up 14%.

A Custom Silicon Bet on Inference

Behind the sector-wide debate over infrastructure costs, Microsoft is pressing ahead with a technological shift of its own. The company unveiled its in-house AI accelerator, Maia 300, on October 13. The processor is slated to enter service from 2027 and will serve as the primary inference system for Microsoft's own products and services — a push to move computationally intensive workloads onto custom silicon.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

The hardware roadmap extends well beyond a single chip. Management has said the Azure-Maia family will be rolled out from 2027 at a scale of multiple gigawatts, underscoring just how aggressively the company intends to expand future compute capacity for cloud services while gradually reducing its operational dependence on external semiconductor suppliers.

UK Regulator Opens the Door to Intervention

Running parallel to the industry backdrop, the UK Competition and Markets Authority has moved Microsoft into its crosshairs. The CMA proposed assigning the company strategic market status within its enterprise software ecosystem and launched a consultation ahead of a final decision, with submissions open until November 13, 2026.

Such a designation could open the door to interventions targeting Microsoft's established product bundling. Reuters reported that the review focuses in particular on how applications such as Teams and Excel are interwoven with the Copilot AI assistant. The watchdog is also examining potential barriers to switching cloud providers, security solutions, and software licensing models.

Analysts Lift Targets Ahead of the Print

Market watchers, for their part, remain constructive on the company's prospects. StoneX analyst Yi Fu Lee raised his price target on Friday to $600 from $525 while reaffirming a "Buy" rating. UBS had already moved first, with analyst Karl Keirstead lifting his target to $675 from $525 on Thursday, also maintaining a buy recommendation.

Those calls will soon face a hard test. Microsoft has said it will report results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 after the US market close on October 28. The release should give investors a clearer read on how the enormous data-center and AI spending is feeding through to margins and cloud growth.

Until then, the debate over the payoff from Microsoft's infrastructure outlay is likely to remain the dominant force steering the share price — with the CMA's consultation running quietly in the background.
