Micron Sheds 2.3% as Toshiba Capacity Talk Ripples Through Memory Stocks

Micron Technology shares closed Friday's session at EUR 954.40, down 2.3%, as sector-wide repositioning weighed on memory names. Reports of planned hard-drive capacity expansion at Toshiba set the tone, though no direct link between those plans and Micron's own operations was established. The headlines alone were enough to cool sentiment across the storage space, and Micron was swept up in the broader rotation.
The pullback landed in the same week the chipmaker delivered a strong set of results. For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, Micron posted revenue of USD 54.23 billion and adjusted diluted earnings per share of USD 33.42 — a performance that cleared the bar many market watchers had set. A mandatory filing with the US securities regulator pointed to robust demand for advanced memory components as the driver, and management signalled confidence in carrying that momentum into the new fiscal year while extending its position in the hardware arena.
Guidance for the opening quarter of fiscal 2027 came in at USD 61.5 billion in revenue, with a margin of plus or minus USD 1.5 billion. The board also declared a regular cash dividend of USD 0.15 per share, payable on 29 October 2026 to holders of record as of 14 October 2026 — a move that underscores the company's willingness to keep returning cash even while funding heavy production investment.
Analysts Stay Constructive Despite the Dip
Sell-side sentiment has not budged. Mizuho's Vijay Rakesh lifted his price target on Thursday from USD 1,300 to USD 1,400 while reaffirming an "Outperform" rating. Baird had already moved earlier, raising its target from USD 1,280 to USD 1,520 on 28 September, also keeping "Outperform" intact. The fact that targets keep climbing after the stock's enormous run suggests the analyst community does not view the cycle as peaking. Instead, the repeated upward revisions read as confidence in Micron's ability to convert an expected supply squeeze into sustained earnings growth over the next two years.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?
That squeeze is central to the bull case. Micron said Friday that the supply-demand balance for memory and storage solutions is likely to tighten noticeably across fiscal 2027 and 2028. Industry-wide, the company projects NAND bit shipments growing in the mid-20% range, with DRAM expanding in the low-20% range. In a market defined by persistent demand for high-performance memory, that pace points not to weakness but to enduring scarcity — conditions that favour producers with pricing power and support healthy margins.
Profit-Taking, Not a Change of Trend
The softer reaction to blockbuster numbers reflects the classic letdown that follows a period of extreme expectations rather than any fundamental deterioration. Media coverage attributed Friday's declines largely to profit-taking, coming after the immediate response to the quarterly report had already been muted. With the stock still up 279% year to date, investors banking gains is a familiar pattern — and when even record figures fail to spark fresh buying, trader sentiment can tip into skepticism quickly. That skepticism looks misplaced against the structural backdrop.
The retreat also coincided with labour developments at Micron's Asian sites. In Taiwan, talks with the union at the Taoyuan facility broke down, prompting the employee representative body to schedule a strike ballot. Micron has said it remains open to further discussions, and conciliation with the Taichung union is set for 22 October 2026.
Micron Technology at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Weighing it all up, Friday's slide looks like a welcome cooldown in a segment that had run hot. Disappointment that standout operating metrics did not trigger an immediate new rally is part of market psychology and does nothing to alter the medium-term picture. If supply stays as tight through 2028 as the latest NAND and DRAM forecasts imply, the current consolidation phase may in hindsight prove to be little more than a breather.
