Micron's Split-Screen Moment: Record Margins, a Bear Raid, and a $10 Billion Research Gamble

Artificial intelligence has been very good to Micron Technology. The memory-chip maker's shares climbed 5% on Tuesday as the tech-heavy Nasdaq Index notched a fresh record close, with AI-linked semiconductor names leading the broader advance, according to Reuters. By premarket trading the stock was quoted at EUR 957.00, a modest gain of 0.7% on the day.
The longer arc is far more dramatic. Since the start of the year, Micron has added 280%, a run that reflects the company's central position in the buildout of data centers and AI infrastructure, where high-bandwidth memory has become a scarce and richly priced commodity.
That narrative now faces its most immediate test. On September 30, after the close of Wall Street trading, Micron will report results for its fourth fiscal quarter of 2026.
Management's ambitious scorecard
The guidance circulating in media reports paints a strikingly confident picture: quarterly revenue of $50.0 billion, give or take $1.0 billion, and adjusted earnings per share of $31.00, plus or minus $1.00. Adjusted gross margin is expected to land near 86%.
Those targets speak to unrelenting demand and firm pricing in high-performance memory. The question occupying market watchers is whether Micron can fully deliver on such lofty figures — and, just as importantly, sustain profitability at that level.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?
Wall Street can't agree on the ceiling
Ahead of the print, the analyst community is unusually divided. Wells Fargo trimmed its price target on Wednesday to $1,400 from $1,525 while keeping an Overweight rating; analyst Aaron Rakers signaled that even a constructive stance doesn't mean the trees grow to the sky indefinitely. Citigroup moved the opposite way the same day, with analyst Atif Malik lifting his target to $1,300 from $1,150 and reiterating a Buy. One camp is already pricing in a normalization of extraordinary margins; the other is betting the cycle runs longer.
Not everyone is playing the long side. Investor Michael Burry expanded his short position against Micron noticeably on Tuesday, according to media reports. His thesis targets a structural shift in the industry: rising Chinese memory-chip production could loosen existing supply bottlenecks and take pressure off prices. If additional capacity floods the global market, the memory segment faces the familiar oversupply that has abruptly ended past booms.
The tape itself looks calm. At Thursday's close of EUR 950.00, the stock sits roughly 14% below its 52-week high but remains at a historically exceptional level — a stillness that masks how quickly the ground beneath the company is shifting.
Building for the next decade
Micron's answer to these risks is a long-term push forward. In August the company unveiled the Micron Research Labs, backed by planned investment of $10 billion over the coming decade. In mid-September, Deirdre Hanford took the helm there as Corporate Vice President and President of the new research unit, overseeing initiatives focused on memory architectures and AI applications. Volume production is slated for the second half of 2027, part of an effort to serve server farms' growing bandwidth needs and to deepen the technological base for future innovation cycles.
The leadership bench was reshuffled at the same time: at the end of August, Manish Bhatia was named President and Chief Operating Officer, while Dr. Scott DeBoer became President and Chief Technology and Products Officer. The message is that operational execution and technological differentiation now sit at the top of the agenda — the surest way to sidestep future price wars.
Whether the optimistic margin assumptions can withstand the headwinds will become clearer on September 30. Investors would do well to treat the upcoming call not as a snapshot but as a stress test of how resilient Micron's growth story truly is against the memory industry's inevitable cycles.
