Micron Technology is finding that strong demand for its memory chips does not insulate it from the broader forces buffeting the semiconductor sector. The stock closed Wednesday at EUR 830.50, up 1.2%, yet the gain barely dents a seven-day decline of 9.7%. By Thursday the shares had slipped 2.5% to EUR 809.30, dragged down by a softer US chip complex.

The pressures are familiar ones. Hotter-than-expected September inflation data revived interest-rate worries, while ongoing debate over how artificial intelligence projects will be financed continued to weigh on sentiment. Layered on top is intensifying competition from Chinese memory manufacturers, a theme that refuses to fade.

Taiwan Plant Ramps Up as Labor Tensions Boil

Against that backdrop, Micron pushed ahead with its Asian manufacturing buildout. At the opening of its second assembly and test facility in Taiwan, COO Manish Bhatia said planned capacity for 2027 is already fully sold. The company continues to run at high utilization for advanced memory technologies.

The new site, named AATT2 and located in Taichung, is designed to expand packaging and testing capacity on the ground and help address tight supply of HBM memory. But the expansion has not come without friction. Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te called on the company and its workers to negotiate in good faith over a disputed bonus system. Unions have called a rally for October 19, which labor representatives stressed is not a strike.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

Buyback Authorization and a Netlist Settlement

Micron also moved to shore up its capital-return plans. The board authorized an additional $33 billion in share repurchases, lifting the total approved program to $35.16 billion. Buybacks under the expanded authorization may begin on December 9, 2026. The decision signals management's confidence in long-term cash flow and gives it room to buy into pullbacks while steadily shrinking the share count.

Legal clarity arrived alongside the financial news. A five-year patent licensing deal with Netlist resolves all pending litigation between the two parties. Micron will pay $30 million per quarter from the fourth quarter of 2026 through the third quarter of 2031, totaling $600 million.

Musk Praises Pricing as Expectations Mount

Sentiment around the stock has also drawn commentary from an unexpected quarter. Elon Musk said Wednesday that Micron has been "reasonable" on future memory pricing, contrasting it with other suppliers he described as "excessive." His remarks land as demand for high-performance memory used in data centers and AI continues to shape the market.

Micron Technology at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Expectations are running high. Micron, Nvidia and Broadcom are together expected to account for nearly 40% of earnings growth in the S&P 500 during the third quarter, according to media reports — a concentration that underscores how central advanced memory has become to AI infrastructure. That reliance on a handful of names is itself a source of volatility, and with funding costs and spending sustainability still in question, attention now turns to the coming quarterly reports from the leading chipmakers.
