Micron's Sold-Out 2027 Capacity Is Being Drowned Out by the Market's AI Jitters
Published on 10/18/2026 at 17:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deMicron Technology shares fell 5.9% on Friday to EUR 781.80, and the trigger had nothing to do with the company's own operations. A broad sell-off swept through semiconductor and memory-chip names as investors questioned how long the massive AI infrastructure build-out can keep its current pace. Worries about how future AI projects will be financed, together with rising interest rates, added to the gloom, according to media reports. News that China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) had reported progress on a denser DRAM design piled on further pressure.
Yet the reaction looks overdone when set against what Micron's order book actually shows. On Thursday the company opened its second advanced assembly and test facility in Taichung, and COO Manish Bhatia used the occasion to deliver a pointed message: capacity planned for 2027 at the site is already fully sold out, Reuters reported. Demand for high bandwidth memory, he added, should grow significantly faster than the rest of the DRAM market through 2028. Capacity contracted years in advance is not the signature of cooling demand — it is a seller's market.
A Profit Engine the Market Is Discounting
The scale of Micron's expected contribution to corporate America's earnings helps explain why the stock is so sensitive to any hint of sector skepticism. Micron, alongside Nvidia and Broadcom, is projected to account for nearly 40% of all S&P 500 earnings growth in the third quarter, a concentration highlighted by Axios. Standing that close to the center of market attention leaves little room for error when sentiment sours.
The competitive picture is more nuanced than Friday's selling suggested. CXMT president Cao Kanyu said on Tuesday that the Chinese memory maker aims to deliver its first server DDR5 RDIMM on a 4F² basis by year-end. Details on capacity, clock speeds and production volumes remain absent, according to media reports, but the announcement was enough to stir nerves about future competition in the server segment. Against that, Micron's exceptionally high gross margin demonstrates the pricing power that scarce, high-quality memory currently commands — and Elon Musk offered a vote of confidence on Thursday, calling Micron's approach to future memory pricing more sensible than that of unnamed competitors. A judgment from a major customer carries more weight than vague announcements about products whose mass production and scalability have yet to be proven.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?
Buybacks, Legal Clarity and a Taiwanese Labor Dispute
Behind the scenes, Micron is preparing for life after subsidy restrictions. On October 8 the board authorized an additional $33 billion in share repurchases, bringing the total across all programs to $35.16 billion. The buybacks become permissible from December 9, 2026 under the terms of the US CHIPS Act. A program of that size is not the work of a desperate management team; it signals conviction that the shares remain attractively valued against long-term cash flows.
Micron also cleared a legal overhang, settling all outstanding litigation with Netlist and securing a five-year patent license. Quarterly payments of $30 million add up to $600 million through 2031, giving management planning certainty for coming product generations.
Local friction, however, could pose short-term logistical hurdles. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te urged negotiations before market open after the union in Taoyuan voted to strike, with a rally scheduled for October 19. A labor dispute carries operational risk but does nothing to alter structural demand.
What the Correction Actually Reflects
Friday's slide lands on top of a 210% gain since the start of the year, a run steep enough to make the stock vulnerable to profit-taking the moment macroeconomic doubts about interest rates surface. Media reports of stickier US inflation further dampened the mood toward rate-sensitive technology names.
None of that changes the fundamental case. Sold-out capacity through 2027 and a buyback program of extraordinary scale outweigh passing market doubts, and the partnership ties to leading technology companies remain intact. The debate over the returns on AI spending will keep volatility elevated in the near term, but the pullback reads as a clearing of overheated expectations rather than the end of the upcycle.
