Micron's Sold-Out 2027 Book Offers Little Shelter From a Bruising Week
Published on 10/17/2026 at 18:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deMicron Technology closed Friday's session at 781.80 Euro, down 5.9%, capping a week in which the memory maker's shares shed 15% as a broad retreat swept through semiconductor equities. The pullback reflected mounting unease over whether the industry's enormous artificial-intelligence spending will earn an adequate return, with chipmakers across the board feeling the chill by week's end.
Competitive news added to the gloom. ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has reported meaningful headway on a denser 4F² DRAM cell design, according to its president, Cao Kanyu, who spoke last Saturday. The Chinese manufacturer also intends to bring a matching DDR5-RDIMM server memory product to market before the year is out — a timeline that has fuelled fears of sharper price pressure on established suppliers such as Micron.
A Labor Standoff in Taiwan
Overseas, a pay dispute is testing the company's relationship with its Taiwanese workforce. On Thursday, President Lai Ching-te urged both Micron's management and employees to negotiate in good faith and avert a walkout. The union at the Taoyuan production site has already voted in favor of strike action over bonus payments, though no date has been set. Reuters reported the exchange.
Demand Side Tells a Different Story
None of that has dented appetite for Micron's most advanced products. Speaking Thursday at the inauguration of an assembly and test facility in Taichung, COO Manish Bhatia said the company's capacity for 2027 is already fully sold out. He also projected that the High Bandwidth Memory market will outgrow the rest of the DRAM sector through 2028. Those chips are indispensable to modern AI accelerator designs, giving Micron a firm utilization floor even when sentiment sours.

Shareholder returns are being scaled up in parallel. The board on October 8 authorized an increase in the company's discretionary share repurchase program to $35.16 billion, with transactions under the expanded mandate permitted to begin on December 9, 2026.
The financial wherewithal comes from a strong close to the fiscal year. Micron posted revenue of $54.23 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, alongside non-GAAP earnings of $33.42 per share. Management has guided to $61.5 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2027.
Separately, mandatory filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission dated October 13 disclosed a series of transactions by executives and board members, including CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. The Form 4 submissions covered share awards, the vesting of contractual entitlements and transactions tied to tax withholding. Micron also published the risk factors section of its annual report on Form 10-K for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.
