Micron's September 30 Reckoning: Soaring Targets, a Growing Short, and Unrest in Taiwan

With Micron Technology's fiscal fourth-quarter report set for Wednesday, September 30, 2026, investors are confronting a stock that has already delivered a 280% gain year to date — and a market that cannot quite agree on what comes next.
The shares changed hands at EUR 958.90 on Friday, up 0.9% on the day. That leaves the stock roughly 14% below its 52-week high, a pullback that has done little to dent a valuation still perched at historically extraordinary levels. The question hanging over the semiconductor maker is whether management can confirm that demand for AI-driven memory chips remains insatiable and supply stays tight — or whether the cycle is quietly turning.
Wall Street Splits on the Road Ahead
The run-up to the earnings call has produced a rare divergence among the analysts who cover the stock. On Wednesday, Citigroup's Atif Malik raised his price target to $1,300 from $1,150 while keeping a "Buy" rating, pointing to firmer DRAM pricing and a supply picture kept tight by data-center construction and the buildout of AI infrastructure.
Wells Fargo moved the other way on the same day, trimming its target to $1,400 from $1,525 — though it maintained an "Overweight" rating. Analyst Aaron Rakers's adjustment suggests that even a fundamentally bullish view has limits. One camp is already pricing in a normalization of outsized margins; the other is betting the current upcycle runs longer. Whether a market fueled by massive capital spending can keep outrunning expectations is precisely what the quarterly update will test.
A High-Profile Bear Takes Aim
Skepticism has found a prominent voice. Media reports indicate that investor Michael Burry expanded his short position against Micron noticeably on Tuesday. His thesis rests on a structural shift: emerging Chinese memory-chip production could loosen existing supply constraints and blunt the pricing pressure that has powered the stock. Should additional capacity reach global markets, the memory segment faces the familiar specter of oversupply — the force that has abruptly ended boom phases before.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?
Trading has been volatile in recent weeks. On September 14, the shares fell more than 5% after warnings from AI company executives about risks and slowing development triggered profit-taking across the semiconductor sector. By Tuesday, the stock had rebounded 5%, lifting Micron alongside other AI names and carrying the Nasdaq to a fresh record high.
Labor Pressure in Taiwan
Operational demand is not the only front demanding management's attention. According to Reuters, a Taiwanese union warned on September 15 of possible strike action, seeking a permanent profit-sharing model that would distribute 15% of operating profit to employees worldwide. No walkouts have occurred, and production has remained unaffected.
Days earlier, on September 11, the company had pledged compensation for Taiwanese employees for fiscal 2026 worth 35 to 68 months' salaries, including a minimum cash payout of T$1.7 million ($53,809.39), while more than 60,000 staff globally are set to receive bonuses.
Building for the Next Decade
Micron is meeting the market's cyclical risks with a long-term push forward. In August it unveiled Micron Research Labs, backed by planned investment of $10 billion over the coming decade. In mid-September, Deirdre Hanford took the helm there as Corporate Vice President and President of the new research unit.
Leadership has been reshuffled in parallel: at the end of August, Manish Bhatia was named President and Chief Operating Officer, while Dr. Scott DeBoer became President and Chief Technology and Products Officer. The changes signal that operational execution and technological differentiation sit at the top of the agenda — a bid to sidestep future price wars.
Wednesday's numbers will show whether optimistic margin assumptions can withstand the headwinds. More than a snapshot, the report stands as a test of how resilient Micron's growth story really is against the memory industry's inevitable cycles.
