Micron's Record Quarter Meets a Three-Front Squeeze

Micron shares dropped 5.9% as bond yields climbed and China's ChangXin advanced on 4F² DRAM, despite strong Q4 results and a raised buyback.

Micron Technology has spent the past year as one of the pillars holding up the S&P 500's earnings engine. This week it got a reminder that even pillars wobble. The memory-chip maker's shares fell 5.9% on Friday to close at EUR 781.80, caught in a broader semiconductor retreat driven by rising global bond yields and mounting doubts about whether the AI spending boom can sustain its pace.

The selloff was anything but company-specific. When yields climb, the discount rate applied to future profits rises with them, and richly valued growth names feel it first. Micron's problem is that the macro headwind lands on a stock with an unusually exposed profile. According to Axios, Micron, Nvidia and Broadcom together were expected to account for nearly 40% of the S&P 500's third-quarter earnings growth — a concentration that cuts both ways. It underscores how central the memory specialist has become to data-center infrastructure, yet it leaves little room for the slightest hesitation in cloud giants' capital budgets.

A Chinese Challenger Reenters the Frame

Alongside the rate anxiety, competitive pressure has resurfaced. Reports on Tuesday said China's ChangXin Memory Technologies is making headway on a denser 4F² DRAM architecture and plans to bring server memory products to market before year-end. For a company like Micron, which ranks among the leading memory suppliers, the news struck a nerve: fears are building that established players could face tougher competition and pricing pressure on standard components. Reuters reported that chip stocks slid broadly as worries about cracks in the AI boom darkened the mood.

Operational friction is adding to the sector-wide drag. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te stepped into a dispute at Micron's Taoyuan site on Thursday, urging management and workers to negotiate in good faith to head off a strike. The standoff centers on bonus payments; the local union has authorized a walkout but has not yet set a date.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

Fundamentals That Speak for Themselves

Against that backdrop, Micron's actual business has rarely looked stronger. For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, reported on September 30, the company posted revenue of $54.23 billion and GAAP diluted earnings per share of $32.87. Guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 was equally bold: revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion, with expected GAAP EPS of $37.84, plus or minus $1.00.

Those figures show how profoundly the semiconductor cycle has been reshaped by demand for advanced memory. Analyst Gil Luria of D.A. Davidson responded on October 7 by lifting his price target to $3,000 from $2,100 while reaffirming his buy rating. Even after the recent pullback, the stock is still up a staggering 210% year to date.

Buybacks, Insider Sales and a Widening Gap

Management has also been signaling confidence to shareholders. Per the Form 10-K for fiscal 2026, the board approved an increase in the share repurchase program to $35.16 billion on October 8, with transactions under the expanded authorization permitted to begin on December 9, 2026. On the other side of the ledger, Chief Legal Officer Michael Charles Ray sold shares on Wednesday under a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan, according to mandatory filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The stock now sits 28% below its 52-week high, extending a consolidation that has run for weeks. Investors are weighing whether the long-term drivers of chip demand can offset the near-term risks of fresh competition and labor unrest. After months of nearly unbroken gains, the market has turned more demanding — and with global yields elevated and the debate over AI's real returns still raging, every new economic and rate headline is likely to produce outsized moves. The hype remains intact; the margin for disappointment has shrunk.
