For every wafer dedicated to HBM3E, the company sacrifices three wafers' worth of conventional DDR output. When the HBM4E standard arrives, that ratio climbs to four-to-one.

Every wafer that flows into AI accelerator memory is a wafer that doesn't exist for the rest of the market. The result: some data center customers are receiving less than half of the memory they ordered. This isn't a reluctance to produce — it's a physical constraint baked into the fabrication process itself.

While the market fixates on large language models and cloud inference, Micron's internal forecasts point to a different kind of demand driver on the horizon. Humanoid robots, the company projects, will eventually require hundreds of gigabytes of DRAM and multiple terabytes of SSD storage per unit. That's a memory intensity jump that could dwarf the smartphone and PC cycles that defined previous booms.

Micron calls this "Physical AI" — artificial intelligence that doesn't just live in the cloud but gets embedded in machines that move through the physical world. The concept is already shaping production strategy. Micron is currently the only chipmaker building new frontend fabs on American soil, with the first Idaho facility slated to come online in mid-2027 and a second following in late 2028.

That "Made in USA" positioning isn't just patriotic posturing. It's already embedded in 16 strategic customer contracts that include price premiums for domestically manufactured chips. Customers are paying more for silicon that doesn't cross the Pacific.

Wall Street Can't Agree on the Destination

The analyst community is split in ways that reveal genuine uncertainty about how this cycle resolves. Citigroup's Atif Malik reaffirmed his buy rating on Friday but trimmed his price target from $1,400 to $1,150, citing sector-wide valuation compression and slower memory price growth. UBS pushed in the opposite direction the same day, maintaining its buy rating with a $1,625 target and pointing to robust cash flow prospects through 2028. Mizuho's Vijay Rakesh had already raised his target from $1,150 to $1,375 in late June.

The average analyst target sits at 1,305.07 euros, implying upside of roughly 73.3 percent from current levels. That's a bold bet on a company whose industry has historically ended every boom in overcapacity and price collapse.

Institutional money is moving in a clearer direction. Citigroup increased its position by 11.29 percent in the second quarter, while Franklin Street Advisors expanded its smaller stake by a staggering 2,461.4 percent. Those flows align with a comment Elon Musk made during SpaceX's August 5 earnings call: global memory demand is growing at over 200 percent annually while production expands just 20 percent — a mismatch he called a clear tailwind for suppliers like Micron.

Micron's fiscal third-quarter results, reported July 28, showed revenue of $41.46 billion — up 346 percent year over year — with earnings per share of $25.11. The company's fourth-quarter guidance calls for roughly $50 billion in revenue and EPS between $30.00 and $32.00. Samsung's record operating profit of 89.5 trillion won on July 30, driven by AI demand for DRAM and NAND, only reinforced the industry-wide picture.

The same day Micron confirmed its 2026 HBM capacity was fully booked, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang qualified the company as a supplier for HBM4 memory in the upcoming Vera Rubin platform — a validation that carries real weight in the AI ecosystem.

Growth's Growing Pains

Expansion at this scale doesn't come without friction. On August 4, two advocacy groups — Neighbors for a Better Micron and Jobs to Move America — filed suit in Albany County Supreme Court seeking to overturn air and wastewater permits for the company's planned $100 billion megafab in Clay, New York. The opposition is a reminder that industrial policy meets local politics at some point.

Inside the company, there's been routine insider selling: CEO Sanjay Mehrotra disposed of 40,000 shares on July 24 under a pre-arranged trading plan, and Chief Accounting Officer Scott R. Allen sold 879 shares the following day. These moves are unremarkable after a run like this one, but they add to the ambient noise.

The fundamental question hanging over Micron is whether this cycle genuinely breaks the historical pattern. The company is betting that the combination of physical manufacturing limits, a coming wave of robot-driven demand, and contracted revenue through 2030 transforms the old cyclical memory business into something new: a shortage with planning certainty.
