Micron's Full Order Books Meet a Market in No Mood to Celebrate

Micron dropped 5.9% as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell for an eighth straight session, even with Taichung output sold out for 2027.

Micron Technology closed Friday's European session at EUR 781.80, down 5.9% on the day — a move that capped a punishing week and left the stock 15% lower over five trading days. The shares now sit 29% below their record high. Yet the selling had little to do with anything going wrong inside the company's fabs.

Quite the opposite. Chief Operating Officer Manish Bhatia said Thursday that planned output at Micron's new Taichung plant in Taiwan is already fully sold out for 2027. On top of that, 26 long-term supply agreements with binding purchase commitments give the company a revenue base stretching to 2030, according to CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. Dell Technologies, meanwhile, is complaining of memory chip shortages while sitting on $95 billion of AI server orders it cannot fill.

A Sector-Wide Retreat, Not a Micron Story

The pressure came from the wider semiconductor complex. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index logged its eighth consecutive losing session, and doubts are mounting across the market about whether the enormous AI spending boom can deliver returns on the timeline investors now demand. Micron was among the chipmakers expected to contribute nearly 40% of S&P 500 earnings growth in the third quarter, according to Axios — a concentration that cuts both ways. If the hoped-for productivity gains fail to materialize at customers, component suppliers feel the demand chill first.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

Even Elon Musk weighed in with praise, calling Micron's approach to memory pricing notably reasonable compared with unnamed competitors. It was not enough to stem the tide.

Burry Bets Against the Shortage

Michael Burry has taken the other side. The prominent investor is using put options expiring in June 2027 to wager that today's supply tightness fades faster than consensus forecasts. His concern is straightforward: once the industry's colossal fab investments reach the market, the extraordinary margins of recent quarters could erode. Adding to the unease, Chinese chipmaker CXMT announced it will present a server module built on a novel 4F² DRAM cell structure this year. Citi analysts dismiss the prospect of genuine mass production before 2028, but on trading floors a theoretical shadow on the horizon is often enough to prompt profit-taking.

A Bonus Fight in Taoyuan

Closer to the factory floor, a labor dispute is brewing. Union members at Micron's Taoyuan site voted 1,994 strong — a 99% majority — in favor of preparatory strike action, demanding a 15% share of operating profit. Conciliation talks are scheduled for next Thursday, and the standoff has drawn political attention: Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has urged both sides toward sincere negotiation. For Micron, the timing is awkward. Smooth supply chains are the precondition for delivering sold-out production to server builders on schedule.

The Cycle Never Really Left

Memory has always carried its own unforgiving momentum. Long-term contracts promise a measure of planning certainty, but history counsels caution: once customers align inventories with actual revenue, the leverage swings back hard. Friday's reaction showed how exposed even highly profitable sector favorites become when the narrative of limitless AI expansion develops its first cracks. Over the coming months Micron must prove more than its production quotas — it has to demonstrate that the business model holds up when AI euphoria gives way to the cold discipline of profitability.
