Micron Technology shareholders got a sharp reminder this week of how twitchy the memory trade has become. The stock fell 5.9% on Friday to EUR 781.80, extending a pullback that has now left the shares 28% below their 52-week high. The trigger was not a demand warning or a missed quarter. It was a press report out of China.

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has reportedly made headway on a denser 4F² DRAM architecture and intends to bring server-grade DDR5 products built on it to market before the end of 2026. That was enough to knock memory names across the board, and Micron, as one of the sector's largest suppliers, took the hit hardest. Earlier in the week the stock had already shed 3.8% to EUR 798.90 as Reuters reported broad weakness in chip equities, with investors fretting over whether the AI spending boom might be developing cracks.

A Threat Priced for 2026, Not for Today

The anxiety is understandable on a psychological level. For years the established memory makers have enjoyed oligopolistic margins, and any hint that those margins could be contested is going to move the tape. But the gap between a technology announcement and reliable mass production at commercial volumes is a long and rocky road in semiconductors, and the market appears to be pricing the distant threat while ignoring what is already contracted.

Micron's own order book tells a different story. On Thursday the company inaugurated its second facility for advanced assembly and testing in Taichung, Taiwan. Speaking on site, COO Manish Bhatia said capacity planned for 2027 at that plant is already completely sold out. He also projected that high-bandwidth memory (HBM) will outgrow the rest of the DRAM industry through 2028 — a segment where Micron holds a clear lead and which is indispensable for AI workloads.

A company with its 2027 output spoken for operates from a position of strength that a future Chinese DDR5 offering does little to shake.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

Buyback Firepower, With a Date Attached

Medium-term support comes from the balance sheet. According to the Form 10-K filed on October 9, the board approved an additional $33 billion share repurchase authorization, lifting the total program to $35.16 billion. The board gave the nod on October 8.

There is a catch: under restrictions tied to the US CHIPS Act, buybacks under the expanded envelope cannot begin until December 9, 2026. Even so, the sheer size of the authorization speaks to management's confidence in long-run free cash flow.

Labor Friction in Taiwan

Not everything is running smoothly. In Taiwan, a dispute over bonus payments has escalated, with the union at Taoyuan authorizing strike action, according to Reuters. No firm date for a walkout has been set. President Lai Ching-te intervened on Thursday, calling on both Micron's management and the workforce to negotiate in good faith.

For investors, the standoff is a risk factor that could disrupt production in the near term, though it does little structural damage to the business model.

The Year Still Belongs to Micron

Set against all of this, the stock is up 210% year to date, a reflection of the extraordinary operating momentum of the past twelve months. Worries about Chinese competition in server DRAM are a legitimate talking point for the years ahead, but they hardly justify a sudden eulogy.

With HBM capacity fully booked for 2027 and a multi-billion-dollar buyback reserve in the chamber, Micron's foundation looks intact. The recent dip may yet read in hindsight as a textbook market overreaction.
