Micron's $32 Billion Order Book Meets a Taoyuan Strike Vote — and a Fresh Wave of Price Targets

Micron's long-term supply commitments hit $32 billion as analysts raise targets, while a Taoyuan union ballots on striking over profit-sharing.

Micron Technology finds itself navigating a semiconductor upcycle from two very different vantage points. On one side, analysts are scrambling to lift price targets as long-term supply agreements balloon. On the other, a labor union at a key Taiwanese fab is balloting members on whether to walk off the job.

The union at Micron's Taoyuan facility launched a strike authorization vote on Thursday, pressing management for a permanent profit-sharing arrangement. The ballot runs through Tuesday, and the company says it remains open to negotiations. The timing is delicate: workers are demanding a formal claim on earnings that Wall Street has already been celebrating.

Order Book Swells to $32 Billion

Operationally, Micron is firing on cylinders that have blown past most expectations. Customer commitments under long-term supply contracts have climbed to $32 billion, according to media reports citing Reuters — a sharp jump from the $22 billion disclosed in June. The bulk of those obligations is backed by cash deposits, a signal of just how tight certain memory capacities have become.

Those prepayments also carry an obligation. Micron has locked itself into delivering on schedule and without interruption to its largest buyers. Any work stoppage in Taoyuan would therefore inject considerable turbulence into the production plan. Management's continued willingness to talk is less a diplomatic gesture than a straightforward risk-management necessity.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

The broader tension is familiar to anyone who has watched a successful chip cycle play out: when profits surge, so does worker confidence. A demand for entrenched profit-sharing is the natural consequence of a phase in which the company itself has generated excitement with record figures and bullish forecasts.

Wall Street Keeps Raising the Bar

Analysts, for their part, have shown little hesitation. Several prominent firms responded to the latest developments on Thursday with significant target hikes. D.A. Davidson raised its price target from $2,000 to $2,100 while reaffirming its Buy rating. Rosenblatt Securities followed suit, lifting its target from $1,500 to $1,900, also with a Buy recommendation. Analyst Kevin Cassidy cited solid earnings prospects and a persistently tight supply of memory chips as the basis for his call.

Those assessments rest on a fundamental confidence underpinned by the hard facts of the order book. The stock was trading pre-market at €963.80 and has gained 282% since the start of the year. That impressive rally also shows how much optimism is already baked into the price — a valuation level that rarely forgives disappointments or operational delays.

Taichung Prepares for HBM Volume Production

The demand picture explains the urgency. Worldwide appetite for high-performance memory for artificial intelligence is set to outstrip supply well into the future. Micron expects market conditions to tighten even more noticeably in calendar years 2027 and 2028 than in the current year. Semiconductor industry capacity is hitting its limits, while data center operators continue to upgrade server infrastructure at scale.

To meet demand for advanced modules used in AI applications, Micron Memory Taiwan is pushing capacity expansion at four locations. Investments there had reached NT$1.6 trillion, or $50.2 billion, by June. A key milestone is imminent: a specialized plant for so-called HBM packaging in Taichung is scheduled to begin volume production in mid-October. Such components ensure the high data transfer rates modern accelerator chips require. The buildout underscores just how capital-intensive new production lines are — and how much is riding on keeping them running.

Guidance and Capital Returns

The business momentum is reflected in the chipmaker's own targets. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Micron guided toward revenue of $61.5 billion, with a range of $1.5 billion. Adjusted diluted earnings per share are projected at $38.15. That outlook follows a fiscal 2026 that the company closed with record operating figures.

Micron Technology at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Alongside those results, Micron reported routine stock awards for executives: board members Robert Swan and Alexis Björlin each received stock-based compensation entitlements under mandatory disclosures, while Teyin M. Liu acquired additional common shares. On the capital-return front, the company declared a regular quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share, payable October 29, 2026, with a record date of October 14, 2026.

The Days Ahead

From a strategic standpoint, Micron's opportunities currently outweigh its risks — but the outcome of the Taoyuan ballot is no sideshow. A labor dispute at a moment of maximum utilization and strict delivery commitments could hit operating margins harder than an ordinary cyclical swing.

Investors would be wise to watch whether management can settle the conflict at the negotiating table. A amicable resolution without production stoppages would suggest the fundamental tailwind remains intact. Should the dispute escalate into an actual strike starting Tuesday, pressure on the valuation would likely build noticeably. The coming days will determine whether Micron can continue expanding its manufacturing edge without disruption.
