Micron Technology shares climbed 4.2% on Monday to close at EUR 814.80, riding a broad recovery across US chip names as investors bet that the artificial-intelligence investment cycle will keep memory makers' earnings power intact for quarters to come. The advance came just days after a sharp sector-wide pullback, and it was helped along by falling US Treasury yields and softer crude prices, which eased the rate pressure on growth-heavy technology stocks.

The rebound was not merely a technical bounce. Market watchers noted that recent worries about near-term competition from China had visibly faded, while demand for advanced memory continues to send positive signals to specialized equipment suppliers and manufacturers alike.

Musk Praises Micron's Pricing Approach

Adding an unusual endorsement, Elon Musk said on October 15 that Micron's approach to future memory pricing was reasonable. His criticism of rigid price demands was, according to media speculation, aimed more at Asian rivals such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. When a customer of that stature singles out the reliability of a supplier's pricing, it strengthens Micron's hand in upcoming supply negotiations.

The broader rally followed a rough patch for semiconductors. About a week earlier, reports of DRAM progress at China's ChangXin Memory Technologies had stoked fresh fears of a price war and displacement, dragging Micron into the selloff alongside growing doubts about the sustainability of AI spending overall, Reuters reported.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

Taichung Expansion and a Wednesday Technology Briefing

The bullish case rests on tangible industrial progress. On the previous Thursday, Micron opened its second advanced assembly and test facility, AATT2, in Taichung, Taiwan, expanding its capacity for advanced packaging. Next on the calendar is a technology webinar on Wednesday led by Scott DeBoer, President and Chief Technology and Products Officer, focused on innovations in DRAM, HBM and NAND. Management gets a stage to demonstrate its technological firepower in high-bandwidth memory, where bandwidth decides market share in AI servers in the years ahead.

Labor Tension and Legal Clarity

Not everything is running smoothly. The employee union in Taoyuan voted for strike action by 1,994 votes — 99% of ballots cast — over a long-running dispute about bonuses and profit sharing. A union in Taoyuan has also announced a solidarity strike for Thursday, according to media reports, while conciliation talks continue between Micron and a worker representative body in Taichung. No concrete strike date had been set as of the secondary report. The company will do everything it can to avoid production interruptions at these key sites, but the conflict could weigh on operating margins in the short term if concessions to the workforce turn out unexpectedly high.

On the legal front, Micron resolved a patent dispute with Netlist through a licensing agreement under which it will pay US$600 million over five years.

Valuation and the Road Ahead

The stock sits 26% below its 52-week high and has gained 220% since the start of the year, meaning a good deal of optimism is already priced in. Even so, the speed with which buyers returned after the sector selloff shows investors remain willing to use weakness in leading memory makers as an entry point. Concerns about Chinese competition are real but are likely to hit mainly the standard segment, while Micron stays technologically on the front foot in high-end memory such as HBM. If management presents convincing progress on DRAM and HBM on Wednesday, confidence in its competitive position should grow further. The threatened strike in Taiwan is a reason for cost vigilance, but it is unlikely to derail the longer-term boom driven by AI buildout — as long as the big cloud and data-center operators keep their investment levels high.
