Micron Girds for Wednesday's Earnings With a Sold-Out HBM Book, a $22 Billion Backlog, and Two Legal Fires Burning

Micron Technology heads into its fiscal fourth-quarter report on Wednesday evening with the stock at EUR 949.90 in European trading, up a staggering 277% year to date, yet still sitting roughly 14% below its 52-week peak of EUR 1,103.80. The setup captures the tension running through the memory chipmaker right now: demand that outstrips supply by a wide margin, offset by legal battles and questions about how long the boom can run.
The supply-demand imbalance is the central fact of Micron's current cycle. Global appetite for high bandwidth memory and advanced server DRAM modules is visibly outpacing what the industry can produce, handing manufacturers unusual pricing power. Wall Street expects that dynamic to show up in a dramatic way when the books open Wednesday.
The Numbers Wall Street Is Bracing For
Consensus estimates point to adjusted earnings of roughly $31.50 per share for the quarter. Revenue is projected at about $51 billion — a year-over-year jump exceeding 350%. Those figures reflect a server segment that is running hot while demand for memory used in traditional PCs and mobile devices softens. Prices for data-center components like DDR5 and HBM keep climbing even as the broader consumer side cools.
Analysts see no peak in sight yet. Harsh Kumar of BMO Capital reiterated his buy rating with a $1,300 price target, arguing that memory demand will continue to exceed global supply into calendar 2027. UBS is even more bullish, carrying a $1,625 target.
The split on the sell side is real, though. Citi raised its target on September 23 from $1,150 to $1,300 while keeping a Buy rating, citing unexpectedly firm DRAM average selling prices. That same day, Wells Fargo trimmed its target from $1,525 to $1,400, maintaining an Overweight rating but flagging uncertainty about how long the current cycle lasts.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?
Locked-In Demand and the Nvidia Wildcard
Micron has moved aggressively to insulate itself from the shortage. The company holds 16 strategic customer agreements with strict take-or-pay clauses, covering firm commitments and prepayments of approximately $22 billion. Its entire calendar 2026 high bandwidth memory output is already sold out under multi-year contracts.
That visibility comes with a caveat. Delays in the ramp of new AI accelerators at major customers — Nvidia among them — could push some anticipated revenue into later quarters. The backlog is real, but the timing of when it converts to cash is not entirely within Micron's control.
Two Legal Fronts, One Product Launch
While the operational story looks strong, the legal picture is messier. On Thursday, the U.S. International Trade Commission opened an investigation into alleged patent infringement involving Micron along with Supermicro, HPE, and Lenovo. Netlist is the complainant, seeking sales and import bans. The agency made clear that launching the probe does not constitute a ruling on the merits.
That followed a September 18 decision by the Munich Regional Court I in Micron's dispute with Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC). The court found that Micron infringed two German utility models covering 3D NAND and issued injunctions against affected products in Germany. Micron rejected the allegations, filed an appeal, and is challenging the validity of the intellectual property rights themselves.
On the technology side, Micron recently demonstrated a 512GB DDR5 RDIMM server module reaching speeds of up to 9,200 MT/s, currently undergoing validation with AMD and Intel. The company also named Deirdre Hanford as president of Micron Research Labs, a move aimed at fueling future development.
With energy markets easing and a friendlier broader backdrop lifting chip stocks, traders have positioned themselves ahead of Wednesday's report. That filing — and the guidance that accompanies it — will set the tone for the months ahead.
