The most telling signal from Metaplanet this week isn't a headline-grabbing Bitcoin purchase or a fresh capital raise—it's the silence. The Japanese firm confirmed on Monday that it bought back no shares in July and that none of the outstanding subscription rights from the 27th series of its share warrants were exercised. For a company that spent much of the past year making aggressive crypto acquisitions a near-monthly ritual, the inactivity marks a conspicuous pause.

Yet while the company's own appetite has cooled, one of America's largest asset managers is moving in the opposite direction. Capital Research and Management Company, the Capital Group unit, has lifted its voting stake in Metaplanet from 9.32 percent to 10.63 percent, according to a disclosure published on July 21 with a July 13 record date. The fund manager now holds 136,059,120 shares, having added roughly 17.4 million securities worth approximately $203 million. That keeps Capital Research firmly in place as Metaplanet's largest shareholder.

A Sharply Slower Accumulation Curve

The timing of Capital Research's increase is notable, arriving just as Metaplanet has throttled back its Bitcoin purchasing engine. During the second quarter, the company acquired 2,823 BTC for just under ¥35.9 billion—around $222 million—lifting its total hoard to 43,000 coins at an average price of roughly $78,608 per unit. That represents the smallest quarterly purchase in a year, a stark contrast to the 17,473 BTC the company amassed in Q3 2025.

The slowdown carries a heavy accounting weight. As of June 30, Metaplanet valued its holdings at approximately ¥409 billion, or about $2.5 billion. The company paid ¥659 billion—$4.07 billion—for those coins, leaving a paper loss of around $1.5 billion. The gap between ambition and execution is widening: management's stated targets of 100,000 BTC by end-2026 and 210,000 BTC by end-2027 now look considerably more distant at the current pace.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

Building a Regulated Revenue Stream

Bitcoin accumulation isn't the only game in town. Metaplanet has been quietly constructing a licensed financial services arm, and on July 13 it formally completed the acquisition of Siiibo Securities for roughly ¥2.1 billion, or about $13 million. The entity has been rebranded as Metaplanet Securities and will serve as the vehicle for Project Nova, an initiative to develop Bitcoin-collateralized bonds and digital lending products. The company is partnering with JPYC and Progmat on the effort, combining Progmat's security token infrastructure with JPYC's stablecoin to create yen-denominated yield products backed by Bitcoin for Japanese retail investors.

The strategic logic is straightforward: rather than simply holding coins and hoping for appreciation, Metaplanet aims to put its treasury to work generating income within a regulated framework—a pivot that could provide a more sustainable funding source for future acquisitions.

Market Skepticism Persists

The stock market, however, remains unimpressed. Shares traded at €1.22 on Friday, up 0.93 percent on the day, but the year-to-date decline stands at a painful 45.24 percent. The stock sits 17.29 percent above its 52-week low of €1.04, reached on June 30, yet remains far from its prior highs. Over a twelve-month horizon, the picture is even grimmer, with the shares down 80.36 percent from the peak touched last August.

Metaplanet at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The disconnect between operational strategy and share price performance is stark. Management frames the Bitcoin accumulation as a strategic triumph; the market, meanwhile, prices the stock as a leveraged bet on crypto's volatility. Near-term pressure on Bitcoin itself stems from macroeconomic headwinds and institutional outflows, even as longer-term on-chain signals—including accumulation by long-term holders and a network hash rate near all-time highs—offer a more constructive read.

Investors now have a clear date on the calendar: August 13, when Metaplanet reports its next quarterly results. The numbers will reveal whether the reduced buying pace is a deliberate strategic choice or a necessity imposed by market conditions—and whether the new securities division can begin closing the gap between the company's ambitious targets and its current trajectory.
