Metaplanet's CEO Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is — But the Market Isn't Listening

Simon Gerovich has been doing the rounds at Bitcoin Asia 2026, declaring the bottom is in for the world's largest cryptocurrency. The roughly 50% drawdown, he argued on August 29, had flushed out the weak hands, leaving buyers with longer investment horizons in control. "I believe the bottom is reached and I expect a significantly friendlier rest of the year," he told Bitcoin Magazine, pointing to Asia's vast capital pool — Japanese households alone hold around $14 trillion in financial assets, roughly half of it sitting in bank accounts.
Two days later, the Metaplanet CEO backed up that rhetoric with a personal capital commitment. On August 28, Gerovich exercised warrants over 64,032,000 common shares in the Tokyo-listed bitcoin treasury company, lifting his total stake to 79,587,500 shares — an ownership position of approximately 5.9%. The rights stem from a modification to the company's 10th series dated August 18, and the newly acquired shares carry a lock-up agreement running until August 17, 2031. That is a multi-year commitment by any measure.
The market, however, has yet to share the CEO's optimism. The stock was changing hands at €1.57 on Thursday, down 3.0% on the day. That leaves the shares a full 67% below their 52-week high of €4.82, reached back in September of last year.
A Flurry of Bitcoin Movements Raises Eyebrows
Complicating the picture is a series of large-scale bitcoin transfers that have drawn scrutiny from on-chain analysts. On Tuesday, roughly 1,600 bitcoin were moved to two newly created wallet addresses. No sale has been confirmed, but the transfer follows a pattern of similar movements over recent days. Monday saw around 4,800 bitcoin shifted to Coinbase Prime, followed within three hours by an additional 2,400 bitcoin, according to market observers.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?
Gerovich has characterized these as routine custody operations, insisting no bitcoin was sold. The company's total holdings remain at 43,000 coins. For shareholders, the question lingers: why would a firm whose entire business model rests on accumulating a bitcoin reserve be shuffling thousands of coins between custodians in such short order?
Adding to the unease is a proposal from MSCI to tighten index inclusion criteria. While this remains a methodological proposal rather than a definitive action against the company, the prospect of being dropped from MSCI indices is unsettling institutional investors. The stock's elevated 30-day volatility of 74% does little to calm nerves.
The US Gambit Continues
None of this has slowed Metaplanet's international ambitions. In mid-August, the company announced a strategic investment in Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise, contributing 2,100 bitcoin plus $2.5 million in cash. In return, Metaplanet receives equity and option rights in the proposed transaction, which is expected to create Superplanet, a US bitcoin treasury platform listed on the Nasdaq. Completion is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to shareholder approval and regulatory clearances in both the US and Japan.
The near-term price action, however, remains hostage to forces beyond the company's control. Expectations of a potential Federal Reserve rate move on September 16 are weighing on the entire cryptocurrency sector. As a bitcoin treasury vehicle, Metaplanet functions as a leveraged play on the digital asset's price — a reality no amount of CEO confidence can alter.
The lock-up on Gerovich's newly acquired shares reads as a genuine signal of management's faith in the long-term strategy. But investors hoping for a quick trend reversal are unlikely to find it here; the effects of insider buying, if they materialize at all, tend to play out over years rather than weeks.
For now, the stock trades at €1.66 in a separate session, up 2.5% on Thursday, with a 30-day gain of 34% but a year-to-date decline of 26%. The gap to that September high of €4.82 remains vast. Whether Gerovich's declared bottom holds will only become clear once the Fed's decision lands and bitcoin's reaction becomes apparent. Until then, Metaplanet shareholders are left parsing the meaning of wallet movements, waiting on MSCI's verdict, and hoping the CEO's conviction proves well-founded.
