Metaplanet's Bitcoin Yield Engine Stalls as US Takeover Bid Takes Shape

A broad crypto-market selloff rippled through Bitcoin-treasury stocks on Wednesday, dragging Metaplanet's shares down 2.5% to close at EUR 1.56. The decline extends a bruising run for the Japanese company, whose stock has now shed 30% since the start of the year. Bitcoin's slide below the $84,000 mark — driven by rising US Treasury yields and a wave of leveraged liquidations — weighed on the entire sector.
Yet the day's trading tells only part of the story. Metaplanet is simultaneously navigating a strategic pivot, a stalled earnings engine, and a cross-border acquisition that would hand it control of a US-listed company.
Super League Deal Would Put 2,100 BTC to Work
On Tuesday, Super League Enterprise reached out to its shareholders with a letter urging support for a proposed transaction with Metaplanet. Under the terms being floated, Metaplanet would contribute 2,100 BTC to the company and, in return, take a majority stake — and with it, control — of Super League Enterprise. The deal still hinges on shareholder approval and customary closing conditions.
The move fits a broader pattern for Metaplanet, which has been steadily repositioning itself from a pure Bitcoin accumulator into a more diversified treasury operator.
Capital Allocation Gets a Rewrite
Earlier in the week, management offered fresh detail on that repositioning. Under a revised capital allocation policy, roughly 85% to 90% of total assets are to be held in Bitcoin. The remaining 10% to 15% is earmarked for strategic investments, including yield-generating assets and corporate acquisitions. Alongside this, the company introduced a net interest income strategy aimed at generating returns above its own cost of funding.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?
Yield Business Hits a Wall
The operational picture, however, is less encouraging. Metaplanet's Bitcoin income-generation segment booked revenue of ¥848.4 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, down sharply from ¥1.75 billion in the prior quarter — a 51% sequential decline. Measured in dollars, that quarterly figure comes to roughly $5.4 million. Year over year, the segment's operating result fell 65%.
Cumulative revenue for the segment stands at ¥9,806.8 million. Despite the soft quarter, management left its full-year forecast untouched, a decision that now sits at the center of investor scrutiny. Whether the company can hit its annual targets depends heavily on a rebound in the fourth quarter. Should revenue stay stuck at current levels, the credibility of that guidance comes into question — and a downward revision would become difficult to avoid.
Treasury Shuffle and a 44,000 BTC War Chest
Metaplanet also used the quarter to reshuffle its holdings. It sold 10,000 BTC for ¥124.7 billion and bought back 11,000 BTC for ¥149.9 billion during the same period, for a net gain of 1,000 BTC. That brought its total holdings to 44,000 BTC as of the September 30 cutoff. According to the company, the transaction was designed to demonstrate its liquidity to rating agencies and bond investors — a step that could open the door to cheaper refinancing down the road.
The existing share buyback program went unused in September, with no repurchases made during the month.
Two Paths, One Inflection Point
The bull case rests on the revamped allocation strategy. If the interest income push — which centers on investing in preferred securities of other crypto-treasury firms — delivers reliable inflows, it could blunt Metaplanet's dependence on raw market swings. A solid asset base of 44,000 BTC, paired with a proven liquidity story, might also unlock better borrowing terms.
Skeptics see it differently. Even with modest diversification, the overwhelming majority of the balance sheet remains tied to a single asset class, leaving the company fully exposed to crypto's price gyrations. Should preferred-securities yields fall short of financing costs, the intended income buffer flips into an added drag. The stock's 30% year-to-date decline captures that persistent doubt. Add execution risk on acquisitions — which tie up cash and carry integration hazards — and the downside scenario sharpens: if the core yield business doesn't recover quickly, book value risks dilution while investors absorb full market risk without a stable cash-flow cushion.
The next quarterly report looms as the key catalyst. Investors will be watching whether income-generation revenue picks up and how the first preferred-securities investments show up in the numbers. Only if the new interest strategy demonstrably earns more than it costs can the risk-reward picture brighten in a lasting way.
