Mercedes-Benz is broadening the scope of its administrative overhaul in Germany, unveiling a voluntary redundancy package that, for the first time, reaches into the management ranks. The program, announced to employees by internal email, is set to launch in December and covers staff outside direct production — a marked escalation from earlier rounds of cost-cutting that targeted only collectively bargained employees.

The Stuttgart automaker's aim is to shrink personnel costs in its administrative apparatus structurally, without resorting to compulsory layoffs. Extending offers to middle and senior management levels underscores how far the company is willing to go as it confronts persistent weakness in China and mounting global headwinds. Management had already pressed roughly 5,000 employees at its Stuttgart-Untertürkheim site to accept meaningful savings.

Return-to-Office Rules Tighten Alongside Cost Drive

Running parallel to the redundancy push is a shift in daily working culture. Under a new company agreement, managers will be empowered to mandate as many as four on-site days per week, a standard the group intends to make the norm in order to sharpen productivity and face-to-face collaboration. The move reins in home-office arrangements that had become widespread.

The efficiency debate arrives at a delicate moment for the equity. Mercedes-Benz shares closed Friday at EUR 39.90, hovering just above the 52-week low of EUR 39.70 — a trough touched on October 2. Since the start of the year, the stock has shed 34 percent of its value. A works meeting roughly a week ago, at which management warned of the consequences of failing to deliver savings, was followed by a 4.1 percent decline in the shares.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

Reports suggest the company is examining ways to trim German labor costs by around EUR 800 million, though Mercedes-Benz declined to comment on the internal discussions.

Buyback and BlackRock Stake in Focus

On the capital markets front, the carmaker has been quietly supporting its own share price. Between September 21 and 25, Mercedes-Benz repurchased 895,000 of its own shares under its ongoing buyback program, deploying a total of EUR 38,084,349.00.

Meanwhile, the world's largest asset manager, BlackRock, reported a total voting-rights stake of 6.04 percent in the DAX-listed group. The bulk of that — 5.87 percent — consists of direct shareholdings, with 0.17 percent held through financial instruments. The reporting threshold was crossed on September 22, with a subsequent notification dated September 25.

FUCHS Alliance Extended in After-Sales Push

Operationally, Mercedes-Benz is leaning on established supplier relationships. On October 1, FUCHS SE and Mercedes-Benz Global Services & Parts extended their partnership for lubricant solutions. The cooperation spans the worldwide after-sales network, securing the supply of approved operating fluids to workshops and customers. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed by either partner.

October Calendar Takes Shape

Investor attention now turns to the company's interim figures. A pre-close call for analysts and investors is scheduled for October 8, setting the stage for the upcoming results. The full interim report for the third quarter of 2026, along with a related analyst conference, is slated for October 28. Detail on margins and unit sales will reveal just how heavily headwinds in core markets have weighed on the numbers.
