Mercedes-Benz Stock Rises 2% on EU Emissions Relief as AI and Nvidia Bets Deepen
Published on 10/17/2026 at 16:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deMercedes-Benz shares closed Friday at EUR 40.82, up 2.0%, as a broader rally in European autos lifted the sector on reports that Berlin and Paris have aligned on proposals to soften planned EU combustion-engine rules and set new local-content requirements for manufacturing inside the bloc. The STOXX 600 Automobiles and Parts index gained close to 2% on the news, according to Reuters.
The bounce offers only partial relief. The stock is still down 32% since the start of the year, a decline that captures the pressure bearing down on Europe's carmakers.
Nvidia Tie-Up and an AI Backbone for Engineering
Alongside the political tailwind, the Stuttgart group disclosed fresh progress on its technology roadmap. Mercedes-Benz is widening its strategic alliance with Nvidia to develop the next generation of driver-assistance and automated driving systems, with the two partners targeting safe, highly automated driving in the coming decade. The joint platform is intended to underpin future model generations.
On the industrial side, the company introduced PLM.AI, an AI-native system that links engineering, production, purchasing, sales and after-sales across its global operations. Management expects the platform to speed up development work by as much as 30% and to shave roughly 17 months off the time needed to bring a new vehicle to market. For selected engineering workflows, the group is holding out efficiency gains of up to 50%.

Mercedes-Benz also began offering bidirectional charging to private customers in Germany, starting with the fully electric GLC and the C-Class.
China Slide Casts Shadow Over Q3 Report
Ahead of the third-quarter 2026 interim report due on 28 October, analysts have turned more cautious. RBC cut its price target on 13 October to EUR 44 from EUR 54 while keeping a "Sector Perform" rating, with analyst Tom Narayan pointing to China as the drag on performance and flagging risks to the operating automotive margin. Jefferies had already trimmed its own target a day earlier, lowering it to EUR 46 from EUR 52 but sticking with a "Buy" recommendation.
The delivery data bear out those concerns. Mercedes-Benz Cars sales in China fell 31% in the third quarter of 2026. Group-wide, the company handed over 491,700 passenger cars and vans in the quarter, a 6% decline from a year earlier. Battery-electric vehicles were the bright spot, with volumes jumping 52% to 78,100 units.
Buyback Keeps a Floor Under the Shares
Support for the stock continues to come from the company's capital-return programme. Mercedes-Benz repurchased 910,000 of its own shares between 5 and 9 October 2026, bringing the total bought back from 1 September through 9 October 2026 to 4,761,805 shares.
