Mercedes-Benz Stock Hovers Near Yearly Low as Analysts Trim Targets Before Q3 Report

Mercedes-Benz shares sit near a 52-week low after a 34% YTD drop, as UBS and Exane cut targets before the October 28 Q3 report.

Mercedes-Benz shares finished Friday at EUR 39.73, a modest 1.2% gain that nonetheless leaves the stock within striking distance of the 52-week low of EUR 38.90 touched a day earlier. Since the start of the year, the Stuttgart automaker has shed 34% of its market value, putting its capitalization at EUR 37.20 billion — a discount that investors must now weigh against a product offensive and a looming set of quarterly figures.

The coming days mark a pivotal stretch for the company. Between October 12 and 18, Mercedes-Benz will present new vehicles at the Paris Motor Show, including debuts of the GLA, the AMG CLA 45, the GLE, the four-door AMG GT Coupe and the electric VLE. Whether that showcase can generate fresh customer interest — and, more importantly, whether it can offset fears of a sustained sales slump in the European home market — is the question hanging over the equity.

Two Banks Cut Price Targets

Sentiment on the sell side has clearly cooled. UBS lowered its price target to EUR 45 from EUR 50 while keeping a "Neutral" rating, and Exane BNP Paribas cut its target to EUR 38.60 from EUR 46, reaffirming an "Underperform" stance. The skepticism centers on the fear that heavy discounts and rising production costs will eat into automotive returns. Should order intake in the high-margin luxury segment weaken, the company's pricing-discipline strategy would come under strain.

Exane explicitly flagged the dispute over possible plant closures as an acute source of uncertainty. If the conflict between management and labor representatives escalates, costly compromises, severance payments or protracted restructurings could weigh further on operating results. Works council chief Ergun Lümali rejected the notion that employees bear responsibility for the current problems, though he signaled willingness to compromise in the standoff over plant closures.

The Margin Is the Whole Story

One metric sits at the heart of the debate: the adjusted operating margin in the passenger-car business. Tim Rokossa, an analyst at Deutsche Bank Research, expects the car EBIT margin in the upcoming report to fall below the company's own target range of 3% to 5%. He cited the difficult market environment in China, the current model mix and significantly higher raw-material costs as the main drivers of that pressure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

Profitability is the key lever for capital-market confidence. Mercedes-Benz has long lived off the premium of a successful luxury strategy promising high selling prices and double-digit returns. If that earnings pillar in the core car business crumbles, the stock loses its most important fundamental support relative to international competitors. Should the margin settle durably at the lower end of — or below — the communicated range, the entire valuation framework would be thrown into question.

A Counterweight: Record EV Demand and Buybacks

There are, however, tangible arguments for a more optimistic scenario. Battery-electric vehicles remain a bright spot: Mercedes-Benz Cars delivered 68,400 fully electric vehicles in the third quarter, a quarterly record and a 61% increase year over year. Across cars and vans, BEV sales rose 52% to 78,100 units. Group-wide, Mercedes-Benz reported total third-quarter sales of 491,700 passenger cars and vans.

Demand for the electric GLC, CLA, GLB and GLA is so strong that those models are already sold out in Europe for the remainder of 2026, with order books extending well into 2027. If the company can work through that backlog without operational friction, it could meaningfully stabilize earnings. Technology is another differentiator: early this week, Mercedes-Benz opened orders for its steer-by-wire system in the EQS sedan. On the brand side, a partnership with adidas around a limited-edition leisure shoe is set to become orderable from October 13.

Management is also supporting the share price through ongoing capital returns. Under its existing buyback program, the Mercedes-Benz Group repurchased 875,000 of its own shares between September 28 and October 2 inclusive. Since the program began on September 1, the cumulative volume through October 2 reached 3,851,805 shares.

Chart Levels and the October 28 Verdict

For investors, the technical picture sets clear boundaries. As long as the stock holds above the 52-week low of EUR 38.90, there is room for a technical rebound ahead of the model premieres. A sustained break below that support, however, would open the door to a continuation of the medium-term downtrend.

The fundamental verdict arrives on October 28, 2026, when Mercedes-Benz publishes its interim report for the third quarter and hosts an analyst conference. Only the margins and the outlook for the final quarter presented there will show whether strong demand for electrified vehicles can offset earnings pressure across the group. If the operating margin slips further and misses the 3% mark by a wide margin, even the ongoing buybacks are unlikely to absorb the selling pressure. Until then, the reception to the Paris show and the defense of the recent yearly lows are likely to set the tone.
