Published on 09/03/2026 at 16:17 | Editorial boerse-global.deA 23-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murder following a house fire in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, that claimed the lives of a woman and her young niece. Jaden Wright faces two counts of murder in connection with the blaze on August 26, which killed 34-year-old Natalie McDonald and seven-year-old Valentina Foster.
Six Charges Brought Before the Court
Wright appeared at Teesside Crown Court on September 3, where prosecutors outlined six charges in total. Alongside the two murder counts, he is accused of two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.
No pleas were entered during the hearing, and the defendant was remanded in custody.
Trial Set for Spring 2027
The court has scheduled the trial to begin on April 14, 2027. Wright will remain in custody until proceedings get under way.
Fire Service Funding Concerns in the Region
The case comes as Cleveland Fire Brigade faces scrutiny over its finances. A consultation opened on September 3 — the same day as the court hearing — over a funding petition for the service.
The brigade has seen its workforce cut by 33% since 2010 and is projecting a deficit of £1.198 million for the 2027/28 period. More than 2,200 people have signed a petition calling for a £1.2 million funding increase to protect frontline services.
