LPKF Laser: Glass Technology Hopes Rise as Restructuring Cuts Deep

LPKF shares rebound from €13.60 after a 50% selloff, fueled by LIDE glass substrate orders and a deep restructuring plan targeting double-digit margins by 2028.

The German laser specialist LPKF is navigating one of its most turbulent periods in recent memory, caught between a brutal operational downturn and the promise of a transformative technology for the semiconductor industry. While the company’s shares have been battered — down roughly 50% from a June high of €30.20 — a nascent recovery attempt is underway, fueled by growing conviction around its LIDE glass-processing platform.

The scale of the recent selloff is stark. The stock touched €13.60 before bouncing to around €14.80, leaving it deep in the red from its 52-week peak. Yet some analysts, including Warburg Research, view the decline as overdone, maintaining a €23.50 price target. Technically, the shares are approaching oversold territory, and market participants are watching whether the €13 level can provide a durable floor.

A First-Half Revenue Collapse

The catalyst for the rout was a dismal first-half performance. Group revenue slumped nearly 40% to €36.5 million, with the solar segment acting as the primary drag. A global investment pause and the industry’s shift toward perovskite cell technology have left LPKF’s traditional solar business in limbo. The damage to profitability was even more pronounced: EBIT swung to a loss of €14.1 million, compared with a loss of just €1.7 million in the prior-year period.

Management has responded with the “North Star” restructuring program, a far-reaching cost-cutting initiative that goes well beyond earlier expectations. The workforce is being slashed by roughly one-third, from 664 employees to 443. The goal is to reduce fixed costs and position the company for a double-digit EBIT margin by 2028.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying LPKF Laser?

LIDE: The Glass Substrate Bet

Despite the near-term pain, investor attention is fixed on LPKF’s LIDE technology, a laser-based process for precision machining of glass substrates used in advanced semiconductor packaging. The addressable market for these applications is now estimated at €1.7 billion by 2030, a dramatic upward revision from an earlier forecast of €500 million. The surge in artificial intelligence workloads is driving demand for glass-based solutions that offer superior thermal and electrical properties.

Early validation has arrived in the form of qualification orders from a leading glass manufacturer and research institutes. These are seen as precursors to series production contracts, which market observers expect to materialize before year-end. For a company that has struggled to convert technological promise into recurring revenue, such orders would mark a pivotal turning point.

Full-Year Guidance Held Firm

CEO Klaus Fiedler has stuck to the 2026 outlook despite the weak first half. The company continues to target full-year revenue of €105 million to €120 million, with an adjusted EBIT margin that could reach 4.5% in the best case. Cost reductions from headcount cuts and process improvements are expected to underpin the second-half recovery.

LPKF Laser at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The immediate trajectory hinges on whether LPKF can secure those series orders for LIDE. If the technology gains commercial traction, the recent selloff may indeed prove to have been an overreaction. If not, the stock’s slide from its highs could have further to run. For now, the market is watching the €13 level — and waiting for the next catalyst from the glass lab.
