Linde shares finished Friday's European session at EUR 426.00, a gain of 2.0%, as a softer-than-expected US employment report cooled fears of further Federal Reserve tightening. The advance had no company-specific trigger — it was the broader US market mood that carried the stock, and industrial gas peers along with it.

At the heart of the rally was September's nonfarm payrolls figure, which came in at just 29,000 new jobs. That fell well short of market expectations and, according to a Reuters report, eased investor anxiety over lingering inflation pressure. Worries about a Fed rate hike at its October meeting faded noticeably, and the major US equity indices moved higher across the board. Linde's shares followed in their wake.

India Acquisition Closes, Supply Begins

Away from the rate debate, Linde pressed ahead with its operational build-out in Asia. On September 30, Linde India completed the purchase of two air separation units from Tata Steel, each with a daily capacity of 1,800 tons. At the same time, the company began supplying the steelmaker with industrial gases from the Kalinganagar Phase II facility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Linde?

Argus Trims Target, Keeps Buy Rating

Analysts, meanwhile, have been revisiting their numbers. Argus Research lowered its price target on Linde from $563 to $538 on September 28, while leaving its "Buy" recommendation in place. The revision caps a choppy stretch for the stock: roughly three weeks earlier, KeyCorp upgraded the shares to "Strong-Buy," a move that lifted the price by 6.0%. Before that, sentiment had taken a hit when the group's third-quarter outlook fell short of market expectations more than a month ago.

Year-to-Date Gain Holds at 18%

Friday's rise adds to a solid run for shareholders, with the stock up 18% since the start of the year. The latest session also underscores how tightly Linde's valuation remains tethered to US rate expectations and the mood on Wall Street's main indices.
