Lenzing's €300 Million Safety Net: Rights Trading Ends October 14, New Shares Due October 23

Lenzing shares climbed 7.9% in the latest session, a rebound from the sharp losses logged the previous week, with the friendlier tone across the ATX and European equity markets providing the backdrop. No fresh company-specific catalyst was cited for the move, which means the advance cannot be pinned to any new operational development. What investors must weigh instead is a pair of distinct storylines running in parallel: a technical bounce in a rising market, and a fully underwritten financing package designed to bankroll the fiber maker's shift toward nonwovens.
A Rebound That Answers Nothing
The distinction matters. A stronger overall market can lift a stock without settling any of the questions about earnings that prompted Berenberg to downgrade Lenzing on October 2, cutting its recommendation from Buy to Hold and slashing the price target from EUR 29.50 to EUR 17.00. The bank pointed to rising viscose and cotton prices failing to feed through to results as expected, the looming capital increase, and what it suspected was a wait-and-see stance from major shareholder Suzano. That assessment frames how the equity is being valued; it does not explain the latest uptick, and a single session of gains does nothing to dismantle those concerns. Only a change in the earnings picture would carry real weight against them.
The Financing Framework in Detail
The rights issue announced roughly two weeks ago targets a gross proceeds figure of about EUR 300 million, achieved through the issuance of 34,756,362 new shares at a subscription price of EUR 8.65 apiece. The company says the measure is fully guaranteed. B&C-Gruppe, Suzano S.A. and Oberbank AG have each committed to exercising their subscription rights on a pro-rata basis, a signal of shareholder backing for the fundraising. That guarantee, however, covers the capital measure itself — it is not a promise that the transformation will succeed economically.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lenzing?
The subscription ratio stands at 10 to 9. Trading in the rights on the Vienna Stock Exchange is scheduled to run through October 14, while the subscription period is set to close on October 20. For shareholders, trading and exercising are therefore separate steps with different deadlines: the end of rights trading does not simultaneously end the window for subscribing. An international private placement of unsubscribed new shares is also planned for October 20.
What Comes Next, and What It Doesn't Prove
Delivery and the start of trading in the new shares are slated for October 23, both contingent on the capital increase being entered in the commercial register. The timetable thus maps out steps still ahead rather than a completed inflow of funds. The financial breathing room discussed in recent coverage should be read as context for a planned financing, not as a finished outcome.
The key separation holds: more financial headroom can support the restructuring, but its economic payoff has to show up in the business itself. Meanwhile, the day-to-day share price move and the operational verdict remain two different things — the rebound signals a better run after a weak week, not an all-clear on earnings.
