Kioxia's ¥920 Billion Leverage Load Tests a Stock Already 63% Off Its Peak
Published on 10/19/2026 at 14:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deKioxia shares finished Monday's session at EUR 76.99, a gain of 7.7% that had little to do with the company's own news flow. The advance came as investors rotated back into Japanese semiconductor and AI-linked names on renewed demand for chips — a rebound with a twist, since the same 7.7% figure appeared on the downside only days earlier, when the stock closed at EUR 71.50 on Friday.
A leveraged overhang with a deadline
The pressure behind that Friday slump has a mechanical source. Bloomberg reported that outstanding long positions financed through margin loans stood at roughly ¥920 billion as of October 15. Should those positions reach maturity, forced selling could follow, adding fresh downward pressure at the trading venues. Thin trading activity and a broader pullback from technology and AI names have compounded the drag.
The speculative build-up lands in a semiconductor sector already on edge. Roughly three weeks ago, unexpectedly higher US consumer prices weighed on technology markets, and the stock now sits about 65% below its 52-week high of EUR 207.00 — a discount that reflects lingering worries about overcapacity and competitive pressure.

Credit quality moves the other way
Fundamentals have been heading in the opposite direction. On October 13, S&P Global Ratings lifted Kioxia's long-term issuer rating to BBB from BBB? and assigned a "Positive" outlook. The agency pointed to earnings prospects from AI data centers and the company's improved net liquidity. Better creditworthiness lowers financing risk and reinforces institutional confidence in the balance sheet.
Product momentum has kept pace. Kioxia unveiled new enterprise solid-state drives in its LD4 series on October 9, built in the E1.L form factor for large data centers. Samples at 15.36 terabytes and 30.72 terabytes are already circulating to selected customers, while the architecture is designed to accommodate capacities of up to 122.88 terabytes down the road. Three days later, on October 12, the company announced a faster model in its GP series, using third-generation XL-FLASH. Media reports suggest the GP line exceeds 20 million random read IOPS at 512-byte blocks — throughput figures that matter enormously to anyone familiar with the storage demands of modern AI infrastructure.
Toshiba lightens its load
Ownership has shifted as well. A mandatory disclosure showed Toshiba Corporation cutting its stake in Kioxia to 11.80%, down from the 12.84% previously reported.
The next fundamental test is already scheduled. Kioxia will publish results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2026 on October 30 at 18:45 Japan Standard Time. Convincing margins and a steady outlook from management would go a long way toward showing whether data-center demand can offset the recent slide — and whether Monday's recovery amounts to more than a brief flicker.
