IREN Slides as Gartner's Cloud Warning Lands on a Sector Already Jittery About Borrowing Costs

IREN shares fell 3.3% on Wednesday, caught in a downdraft that had little to do with anything the company said or did. The trigger came from outside: a Gartner forecast published a day earlier warning that more than 80% of specialized cloud providers could lose their independence by 2030, squeezed by cost pressure and business models that are hard to tell apart.

That projection does not speak to demand for compute alone. It raises a blunter question — whether the companies building AI infrastructure can actually afford to keep doing it, and whether they stand out enough to survive. Gartner also estimated that more than $3.5 trillion in AI infrastructure spending could be exposed to impairment risk by the end of 2030. That is an industry-wide forecast, not an announced write-down at IREN.

A Sector-Wide Retreat, Not a Company Story

The Gartner note landed on a market already on edge. Reuters reported a broad selloff in heavily debt-financed AI infrastructure names, with hotter-than-expected US inflation data stoking worries about the cost of funding. IREN was among the data center operators whose shares gave ground in that move.

The scale of that pressure is visible in CoreWeave, whose bond maturing in 2032 yielded 14.5% at Tuesday's close. That figure describes CoreWeave's financing situation, not IREN's — but it explains why investors dumped a range of AI infrastructure stocks at once. Rising expectations for US rate hikes and concerns about CoreWeave's borrowing costs weighed on the whole sector, which means IREN's decline cannot be pinned cleanly on any single project or contract announcement.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

For shareholders, that distinction matters. Sector-wide valuation pressure is not the same thing as a confirmed change in IREN's business. At the same time, the anxiety lands on top of company-specific questions about how well existing data centers run and how smoothly further projects come together.

Redbank: A 900 MW Proposal Still in Early Review

IREN presented early plans for its Redbank campus to the Wagga Wagga community on Tuesday. The proposed data center site in New South Wales would carry 900 MW of capacity. According to the company, it is not part of the announced portfolio of 5 GW of secured power.

The project remains in early assessment. IREN is still working toward a grid connection, and planning approvals have yet to be granted. Redbank is therefore an expansion prospect, not a locked-in addition to the stated power portfolio — a boundary that matters more than the headline size of the number.

Contract Chatter Without Confirmation

On the demand side, there is a report of a possible deal with Anthropic. The Information was said to have reported Sunday on an as-yet-unannounced multi-year cloud contract with IREN. Neither company confirmed the arrangement in that coverage, and contract terms were not disclosed.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Older operational concerns add another layer. On October 7, media outlets reported reliability problems described by customers at older IREN sites in British Columbia, citing outages as well as network, storage and air quality issues. Last week brought further complaints tied to the Prince George and Mackenzie data centers, where customers reportedly described multi-day power outages along with network and storage problems. At the time of that reporting, no public statement from IREN was available.

None of these reports is a confirmed cause of the recent declines. What they illustrate is why reliable operations count for IREN alongside any potential customer contracts. The questions investors are left holding are separate and distinct: the industry's financing climate, Redbank's early-stage status, and the reported operational issues. A falling share price answers none of them on its own.
