IREN's Summer of Extremes: A Forced Liquidation, a $2.8 Billion Backlog, and a Bullish Bank of America

The arithmetic of IREN's stock tells a story of whiplash. Over the past twelve months, the shares have gained 145.04 percent, yet they currently trade roughly half below their 52-week peak of 68.61 euros, a distance of 50.45 percent from that early November high. The annualized 30-day volatility sits near 138 percent. This is not a market that has made up its mind — it is a market that is being pulled in two directions at once.
The most dramatic tug came in late July, when the four-times-leveraged fund Situational Awareness LP was forced out of its entire IREN position — a book worth around $401 million. The stock tumbled to a session low of $29.31 before rebounding roughly 30 percent from that trough, with media reports indicating that Citadel absorbed the liquidated positions. Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani, who reaffirmed his "Outperform" rating and $100 price target on July 30, interpreted the relatively smooth market reaction to the fund's forced exit as a constructive signal. The episode underscored a dual reality: IREN's share price is now driven not only by its operational trajectory but also by the leveraged bets of speculative market participants.
The Mirantis Deal Closes, and a New Overhang Emerges
Amid the volatility, the company has kept executing. IREN completed its acquisition of Mirantis, the cloud-software provider, paying roughly 12.6 million of its own shares plus $40 million in cash and additional consideration in the form of restricted stock units. The deal is designed to strengthen IREN's ability to orchestrate AI workloads and bolster customer support. On the same day, the company filed a prospectus supplement with the SEC (Form 424B7) permitting the resale of up to 11,981,668 common shares held by former Mirantis shareholders who received stock in the merger. For existing investors, that filing introduces the possibility of additional supply should those new shareholders choose to trim their positions.
The acquisition fits a broader narrative of a company repositioning its infrastructure away from cryptocurrency mining and toward AI compute. That pivot has produced eye-catching numbers. On July 20, IREN announced multi-year customer contracts worth $2.8 billion with AI developers including Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Perplexity. The company subsequently raised its year-end target for annualized AI-cloud revenue from $3.7 billion to over $4.0 billion, with roughly 85 percent of that goal already secured by contract. Management has also noted that customer prepayments will cover approximately 45 percent of the associated GPU investments, a structure designed to reduce the need for external financing as the company expands its data-center footprint.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
A Passive Stake and a Divided Wall Street
The scale of those contracts helps explain why institutional investors have been willing to look past the share-price turbulence. Bank of America Corp disclosed a stake of 21,027,180 common shares as of June 30, representing 5.8 percent of the company, according to a Schedule 13G filing. The filing classifies the position as passive — signaling no activist intent, but reflecting growing institutional interest in the stock.
Wall Street's formal assessments remain split. H.C. Wainwright & Co. reaffirmed its buy recommendation in late July and raised its price target from $85 to $90, citing improved pricing power and the increased 2026 revenue target. Bernstein had already confirmed its $100 target earlier in the month following the NVIDIA partnership announcement. Other houses have adopted a more cautious, neutral stance, a sign that the valuation debate has become contentious after the stock's strong run.
Management Moves and the August Report
The leadership team has been expanding in parallel. Eric Hammersley joined as Chief Information Security Officer on July 15, following the early-July appointments of Kambiz Aghili as Chief Product Officer and Michael Nudelman as Chief Development Officer. Separately, SEC filings show that co-CEOs Daniel Roberts and William Roberts each received roughly 9.1 million shares in early July under employee incentive programs — a move the independent board chairman later defended in a letter to shareholders.
IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The next inflection point arrives on August 27, when IREN reports fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results for the period ending June 30. Between the Mirantis integration, the new billion-dollar contracts, the potential share sales by former Mirantis holders, and the lingering effects of the forced liquidation, that report will offer investors their clearest read yet on whether the company's growth trajectory can withstand the weight of its own volatility.
